(in conjunction with the OPENER LOOKS GOOD THREAD as this is the same spot as that one mentions)

got out there this morning armed with a few cameras....unfortunately i cant pull the BETTER video from my other camcorder until i get a firewire cord...so I went ahead and uploaded the video from my flip camera. if you turn up the volume you can hear all the mayhem going one!!

it was one awesome morning for sure. They started hammering pretty early and for a while all i heard was 1 LB, then it was like a wave of gobbles going down the ridge. Once they started to fly down it was like it was raining turkeys they were coming out of every where in masses. A group of about 12-15 toms flew down first and hit the ground strutting. Hens and more LB's starting coming down all over the field. Once they were all on the ground the toms kept on fighting and flogging each other (especially the big group that got down first, which is think were the same big group of jakes i saw last year)..... everytime 1 would start fighting they would all come out of strut and run to the action.

Saw approx 20 different LB's a few jakes (once with a white fan) and 4 bearded hens. At one point a big group of the toms was about 12 yards away and all gobbled together which echo'd in the blind and my heart was racing. one of the best mornings i have ever had in the woods.

only issue was the cloud cover which didnt let me take a bunch of good pics due to such a low light condition. It was dark enough that the shutter speed on my camera was slow and i could not keep it steady enough to not make it blurry. Wish i had a tri pod with me for sure. And a group of hens was about 3ft from me and i was scared they would see me moving trying to get pics so for a period of time i was stuck in a still position

updated with the other video camera i had...the battery died but still got a few good mins. In this one you can see the fight that transpired between the big wad of 2 year olds...it went well beyond what i filmed and they ended up chasing that one out of the field...there were a few other fights after that between some other LB's and some hens...also notice the cool jake with the white tip fan

quick video of the morning...wish i could have zoomed more with the flip camera but it is what it is...turn up the volume for sure

I wouldn't sleep a wink between now and the opener.

You sure you don't need some backup :D ?

Wow, looks like you will have another great season.

How much land do you have to hunt one?

Those are some great Pictures, and I really enjoyed the video.

With Turkeys like that, you might take 3 or 4 Gobblers this season.

that property is only about 200acres totally surrounded by large fields. Its really the only woods in the area for them to roost on. IF you dont kill one out there by 8am you can just leave and come back at 2 because once they hit the big fields you will never kill them.

I am taking 1 or 2 kids there next weekend so hopefully they start it off with a bang (pun intended). funny thing is i have taken 2 LB's from this piece each year for the past 5 years and every year there seems to be more then the previous year. They are not normally THAT thick in there and i imagine they will be a bit more spread out by the time my season opens. the only catcher out there is a creek runs right though it (the other side of the field in the video) and they roost right on it. You have to basiclly pick which side you think they will fly down in and if you pick wrong you are screwed. the creek is DEEP most of the spring so crossing it is a tough job and they can see you until the leaves come in.

with the right decoy and approach, you can kill them big field birds all day long!

....if you're allowed to hunt them, of course.

you have 20 in that one flock :D
Correct me if I am wrong REN, but that is most likely a winter flock that will break up and disseminate all over the nearby farms in the next 2-3 weeks. I know this would be the case if I had permission to hunt that pretty green field. :)

lol yeah they will start to break up but the overall number will stay somewhat high only because it is really the only roost woods in the area. when i say surrounded by large fields i mean LARGE like the woodline on the other side you need binos to see.

Last year there was usually a good 8-10 LB average per morning up on the ridge all those came from. The field is wheat and when it gets up knee high they really start to spread out...late season is hit and miss out there. I tend to hit it hard early and phase my hunts out as it gets warmer on the piece.

Team Thunder Chicken Mafia... Had a death in the family but i got a few pics to put up once things settle back down.

Looks like your localized area there had a particularly good hatch in 2009, and good poult survival. Most of the Toms "appear" to be 2-yr old birds to me. Two-yr olds are the most vocal, and their gobbling seems to be contagious in getting any older birds to chime in. You should have some more AWESOME mornings this Spring. :)
