Now that we're half way through the season, and I hear a lot of you will typically start off with a lot of calls in your vest and end up with only a couple, what have you narrowed it down to?

On opening weekend I carried a tube and one or two mouth calls, and left the slate and box call in the car. I used the mouth call and tube call on opening weekend, but after that, I have only been using the tube call. Now I only carry two calls in my shirt pocket each time.. one HS. Strut Raspy Old Hen diaphragm, and my homemade 2-reed tube call. I don't even use the mouth call, I guess it's just backup.

Well dang. Congrats on that, and glad to know I carry that call. It is a great sounding call.. not too clean, not too raspy. I just don't use it much. I really like the sound of my tube call as well and it's rewarding to call in a turkey on something made with your own hands.

The best thing I did this year buy the Essentials Vest by Ol' Tom. This vest is superlight and allows me to carry only the calls I need. I carry 2 mouthcalls, 2 slates with 4 strikers, a regular box and a paddle box.

As much as I love using my mouthcall, I rarely hunt without at least one box call and one slate. In my opinion, friction calls are much better locator calls than diaphrams.

I could kill any turkey any where on any day with one call. And I carry 2 of them in my vest. The call is an aluminum friction call made by Darrin Dawkins. Hands down the deadliest call I have ever used, period. I carry those 2, one for backup and a Blue Billy Yargus diaphram (4 of them) and those are the only calls I carry in my vest.

I have the same call and mine sounds great too (to me). I just acquired it this year so I am really looking forward to using it next year. With that said, I would venture to say my David Halloran ceramic and aluminum pot calls are just as deadly. I have only a seen few turkeys walk away from either of them over the last few years.

Lol at the "Any turkey, any day, any where" ;)

Seems like you'd get tired of it if it was really that easy.

You missed the point, the point was that I personally don't need 75 calls. I have full confidence in two, and that is all I carry.

I still don't think there's much difference between most of the 3 to 4 reed calls- it's how you use them that matters. I don't care for the 2 reed calls, however (although I've called in several with them).

I really like the custom handmade woodhaven glass call for feeding purrs to loud yelps.

I can, but there isn't much too it. Plain walnut pot with black oxidized aluminum. It isn't flashy, and if you just saw one on a table it wouldn't catch your eye. However, it has a breaking yelp, and a tone which is absolutely irresistible to most gobblers that hear it. I honestly have never used a call that gets the response that it does. It should be outlawed.

I have never used an aluminum pot, but do love to use pot friction calls for soft calling. I tried a glass call once, but never could get it prepped right.

With the aluminum ones, how much do they have to be roughed up, and do you use sandpaper, sanding sponge, or something like a Scotch-Brite pad?

Not Settermans but I expect his two look almost identical. Pretty simple overall, but I have heard nothing but great things about them. I plan to break mine in next year to see what the hype is all about.
