Woodhaven Calls

I loved the old billy yargus with the blue tape, but since then they have totally jumped the shark. The colored latex calls are worthless for me and the way I call. They are far too loud, and I am sure they work great for others, but for me there are much more effective calls on the market.

I used to be an absolute Woodhaven disciple, way back when they packaged their calls in zip locks and Mike made them alone in his house I was a huge fan.

The first Aluminum friction I owned was one Mike made as a prototype and gave me about 20 years or so ago. Was/is a great call, but has since been retired.

I wish they had stuck with using normal latex in their calls, but anymore their calls just do not fit my style of calling or hunting.

That's awesome to have a call that old. Hang on to it. I wish season was here already. Are you coming to the nwtf convention in Nashville?

I was a full on Woodhaven guy, however with the price increase they have starting with on all their calls and how they have moved away from the Custom approach and more into the mass production line i have slowly faded away from using them.

I still like the Red Wasp but looking at other options to replace it.

I swear when I was younger id go to Walmart every weekend and buy mouth calls made by primos. I wouldn't doubt if I had every call they made lol.

HA i did the same with HS Strut calls till i found the cuts i like.

I Personally have tried to get more into the custom made ones then massed produced calls when possible. nothing wrong with mass ones like HS or Primos as they have killed thousands of birds.

I am gonna go with David Holloran calls this year, dude makes a NASTY glass call and his mouth calls are pretty sweet.

I still have 2-3 Red Wasps so i will use them until I lose them or the rot.

I prefer my tube call but I have a red wasp and it sounds good, real raspy though, just depends on preference I guess.

I used them until I started making my own, IMO they are way over priced, there are several on the market that are as good without the premium price.

They sound good but I think my h.s strut calls sound just as nice with a lower price tag. Dont get me wrong there are some great callmakers out there that make better sounding calls than the mass produced calls. I always have used h.s strut to call my birds in and I dont wanna change anything.

Have y'all ever tried a wingbone?
yeah and then lost the one call I made in the woods. Still need to make another one but have to kill another bird for the wings first.

Yes the Scott Ellis is brown with yellow its a bigger split v with wings trimmed. Took me a lil while to get used to the thicker tape.

On a side note yekrut on here makes a sweet sounding mouth call. Sounds as good if not better than the woodhaven. But easier to run.

What about this can y'all owl or gobble without a call? I can hoot but trying to gobble sounds like a dern goat

I can owl hoot really well with my voice, but I never do it other than just to entertain folks at camp. In other words, I don't locate birds with an owl hoot period.

I cannot gobble with my natural voice, but with a 2 reed diaphram with no cuts in the latex I can gobble pretty darn good.

same here, i use a tube call to do it but a 2 reed or thin 3 reed i can use that as well.

I can however use the Palmer Owl call as a duck call lol
