Would you shoot a bearded hen?

I have no desire to shoot one myself, but like others have said, not gonna knock someone that does. I like the show before the shot, gobble, spit and drum, etc.

I see bearded hens every spring turkey season and I have never shot one even with my bow!!I wish bearded hens and jakes were both illegal to kill spring or fall. With the population going downhill, wish the gobbler limit was reduced to 2 per season!
I think the population is going down hill more to the lack of hunting predators and nest egg predators alot more than a person killing a Jake or bearded hen

I have had 3 within shooting range in my turkey hunting career. I never attempted to take a shot. I just never had an urge to take one and doubt I ever will. It just doesn't meet the requirements that I set for myself in a Turkey hunt.

No.
Never have, never would, never will.

The ONLY reason bearded hens are "legal" in TN's spring turkey segment is
to accommodate inexperienced or novice turkey hunters who might not be able to tell the difference between a hen and a Tom.
This is basically for "simplification" of the regs,
since a legal bird must be "bearded".

No one wants to unnecessarily harshly penalize a novice hunter for an honest mistake,
which remains the only reason bearded hens are legal in TN.
But the more experienced hunters are damaging their local turkey population when they knowingly kill a bearded hen.

Also, for somewhat similar reasoning, short-bearded "jakes" are also legal in TN,
in part to prevent harsh penalty for those unable to distinguish a juvenile jake from an adult Tom turkey,
and in part to provide easier opportunity.

I shot one years ago, but probably would hold off now.

Not trying to highjack, but I called in a tom for a friend that came in gobbling and strutting. Had good spurs and a full fan. No beard whatsoever. Was he legal?

No. A less common but equally stupid consequence of the "bearded turkey" rule.

Same thing happened to me this year at Yuchi.

Those that would shoot one, what is the desire?

a legal fall bird that I can put on the smoker for thanksgiving. Also as a bonus having a beard off a hen as a keepsake.

There is no reason to kill a hen fall or Spring unless your just completely incompetent as a hunter and desperate to kill anything. When someone tells me they would shoot a hen they just told me everything I need to know about there hunting abilities.
The THP YouTube guys just posted a video of them stalking and shooting a bearded hen while dusting, zero skill or hunting abilities involved just a clown that can barley shoot or hunt needing a picture for Facebook. A lot of people have voiced there disagreement with what they did. Hopefully the sponsors will take note and these clowns will not be posting crap like this anymore.

For the life of me I can't understand why the killing of any hens anytime would be legal when the turkey population decline is so prevalent in many counties. Another reactive versus proactive approach in the making????

How did your season go?

The THP group released a podcast in reference to the hen killing. Much respect to the THP guys on their response.

I would worry more about predators than I would hunters
