I have been taking my wife opening weekend for the last 3 years. We got really close last year I had 2 gobblers within 10 yards that I could have killed both, but she was sitting in a hole and could not see them. It was really foggy Saturday morning and the birds did not talk. So we went out Saturday about 3 we had not walked 100 yards and I called and bird gobbled not 60 yards away. We should have just sat down but in my infinite wisdom I tried to get her in a better position. I never saw the bird but he gobbled twice and we never heard or saw him again.
So Sunday morning it was supposed to rain, but I woke up and it was not raining. I could not get the radar to pull up. I asked the wife if she wanted to get up and go for a little while before the rain started, but she did not want to go. So I took off and it was starting to break day once I got to where the bird gobbled the afternoon before. I hung out for a minute to pin point where he was at and I moved into within 150 yards and sat down and got comfortable. I called about 4 or 5 times in the next 20 minutes and he always answered and he was gobbling at every owl and some of the crows. I finally thought I heard him hit the ground, and about a minute later he hammered I looked around the tree in front of me he was strutting about 40 yards. I eased my barrel around the tree and busted him and he flopped for 80 yards down the ridge as I chased after him. I even used the wife's gun to kill him and it was all over with a few minutes after before the rain started! 10 1/4" beard 1 1/16" spurs.
