100 $

He started that a couple of years ago, I order mine with the slick finish though. I think he told me last night he had another couple of each left for this year

I talked to Darrin today. Very nice guy. Can't wait to get my call! I'm like a kid on Christmas Eve. He said he makes them in anodized or slick aluminum. The anodized is the "sandblasted" ones you are referring to. FYI, he said after selling mine he only has 2 left and won't make any more this year.

I just messaged with him and it seems to be some confusion here... He specifically told me all his aluminum calls are slick whether anodized or not.. He said although they are not as user friendly, they have a much better "pop" than the others...
I an confused because I thought anodized was not "as slick".

I'm assuming here but I think he is saying he doesn't bead blast his calls like other makers. But I think the anodized is going to be somewhat rougher than the slick. Maybe I misunderstood him during our phone conversation. I'm sure he told me he will make them slick or anodized.

I have never seen anything other than a Dawkins anodized aluminum. To my knowledge, all anodized aluminum calls are bead blasted before application of the anodized coating. If you sand or use a scotch brite, you run the risk of cutting through the anodized coating, which is basically like going back to raw silver aluminum. I suggest using pool chalk on your striker as others have eluded to, or you can get you some rain chalk (my preference) and either apply it to your striker, or wipe it across the surface of your aluminum call to make the striker grab better. The good thing about anodized aluminum is that no matter what you do (other than sanding it, scuffing it, etc), you can take an alcohol swab and clean the surface back to the original shape it was in when it was shipped to you. I will do some digging and see if I can find some pointers from some of the "pot call nuts" that I have talked with and learned from over the years.

While I agree that the message above seems a bit confusing, I would not hang my hat on that exchange of words. If it were me, I would call him and ask him very pointed questions to clarify exactly what you are wanting to know. Regardless of the type of material, all of Darrin's pots are full of turkey.

For what it is worth, Darrin makes a fine crystal pot too. It will flat sing.

If you haven't noticed by now, Darrin is my all time favorite call maker for any pot call that he offers, and he is a very down to earth guy that we can all relate to. There was a time when I sought to find the best pot call available (subjective and definitely debatable), but once I purchased and hunted with several of Darrin's pots (regardless of surface type), I quit buying pot calls altogether, with the exception of a copper pot, which to my knowledge, Darrin does not make. Watch this video to see why my Dawkins slate is my favorite. It is all turkey and then some.

The Dawkins aluminum I have is slick anodized aluminum. I'm not sure exactly what the process is for anodizing a call, but when people say a call is powder/bead blasted, the surface of the call is gritty and helps grab the striker. Most powder/bead blasted surfaces are also anodized.

Here's a surface that is anodized but also has one side that is blasted:

The Dawkins call is just anodized, not powder-bead blasted. The blasted surfaces do tend to grab the striker which is why he likely said his calls have more "pop."

Those are good examples, thanks for sharing. Last I talked to Lon, if I remember correctly, he said his anodized call does not have to be roughed up. Which is a major advantage in my opinion. However, just from all the good things I am hearing from you guys about the Dawkins call, I will prolly try one.
Thanks for everyone's input.

Blasted calls do not need to be roughed up. You clean them by wiping them down with an alcohol pad. That is the real benefit of blasted calls. The Dawkins call is certainly a winner, but I do wish he offered a blasted aluminum as well.

Can't hide money hahah. All this talk really makes me want to call him but I am doing my very best to not dial the phone
