Hunted him in velvet but he was too wily and gave me the slip.

Then last week I saw him from 200yds across a hay field in broad daylight fighting a big 8pt.

I moved my stand over to where I thought he was coming from but he gave me the slip again by coming out 100yds away. After several days of this I finally realized that even though his path was changing, he was consistently staging up under one particular oak tree before entering the field at dark. I couldn't at first figure out why that tree when all the oaks were dropping, then I saw red fruit on some small shrubs in the undergrowth. They were crab apples!

So I moved my stand again and this time got him at 28yds but no shot, so I took a pic instead.

Moved the stand yet again to close the gap and sure enough he showed up. He stood broadside still with face down crunching on acorns and crab apples, and 60yds & 4sec later he was on the ground waiting for a tag. The wise old buck gave me fits but his sweet tooth let me get my foot in the door.
