#3 made me work for it

Congrats. You debating going back to the longbeards?
nah, I'm not fooling with the resin shot anymore. Holds the pattern too tight for close range shots. I'd rather shoot heavier than lead loads out of a more open choke if anything. The TSS #9 has my interest but I won't pay that much, unless I get into hand loading.

I think I will try a different choke and see how the Double X shells do. All I want is a decent pattern at 40, nothing crazy good, just a gun that I know will kill at 40 and no farther.

Congrats!
I honestly have no idea what my pattern is past 35 as I do t take shots that far. But kudos to you for knowing your range and sticking to it. Especially how frustrated I'm sure you were after a miss. Most people seems like would keep on pushing the limits.

Congrats on the bird but man that gun is deadly at 40. I know.
it ain't with a cheap Truglo 665 and 3 inch Double X... I'll be getting a new choke before next year and maybe try the 3.5 inch shells

Try a kicks gobblin thunder or a primos jelly head out of that 870 and you should see a world of difference. I've owned 5 870's and have experimented with a lot of different choke/shell combos and I haven't seen one yet that didn't like either of the chokes I mentioned above.

you're the 2nd or 3rd person to recommend the kicks choke. Guess I'll be giving that one a shot

I shot a .670 Kicks Gobblin' Thunder choke in mine for years and it was a stone cold killer to 45 yards all day long with 3.5" Winchester High Velocity #4 lead pellets moving at 1300 fps. If I did my part, the turkey went home with me.

Here is the old chart Kicks used to publish for lead shot before the HTL and TSS craze took over. My experience/testing confirms it is spot on for lead turkey shells.

A 660 jelly head and an 870 are a perfect combo.

That's the exact setup I used in my 870 prior to handloading TSS. It worked great w nitro or hevi-shot. I will say that I never shot the LB's through it though.

I'm shooting #5 LBs with an 870 through a jellyhead choke and have had great results.
