Alabama's freshman QB & Jalen Hurts

ALABAMA smartest move would be to condition and move Jalan to running back. Its been reported that he is faster than any of the running backs they have now. Have him double as a QB in the event TUA gets hurt or some unforeseen situation arises where they need cool hand luke.

Jalan is probably got alot of soul searching to do. He needs to decide what is best for him at this point. If he wants to be a QB in the NFL he is going to have to probably step down to say FAU and get with Kiffin and let Kiffin mature him and let him grow.

Hurts will transfer to UT, sit out a year to improve his "craft," and have two years eligibility remaining.

By UT, I mean THE University of Texas.

Book it.

Soul searching is right. If Jalan is honest with himself, he doesn't have the skill set to succeed as a quarterback at the next level. He IS, however, an excellent athlete with a good head for the game. Personally, I think he should seriously consider moving the RB or maybe slot receiver, while also working with the #2's as qb. It would also add a nice wrinkle for Bama: even is he was primarily a running back, any time Jalen was in the backfield the defense would have to at least consider some kind of wildcat play.

I really hope he stays in Tuscaloosa. I think it could be best for both him and the Tide.

Re: Alabama's freshman QB & Jalen Hurts

Let me start out by saying I'd draft Peyton over Hurts, but......

Hurts sophomore year rating- 152.1

Peyton's highest rating of his UT career-147.7

Hurts is is 24-2 as a starter. 40 td to 10 int (1 this year)

I would jump up and down if he transferred to Arkansas

Jalen's 24-2 record looks impressive for sure. That is, until you break it down. His freshman year in 2016, Bama's defense scored 15 pick 6s, and some of those won the games for them when the offense had stalled out. Take those pick 6s out, and some of those Ws would be in the L column. Jalen rode the wave of a super dominate defense his freshman year, that was crippled his sophomore year due to injuries all down the list.

Now, he did step up his game the 2017 season for sure. I'm racking my brain trying to remember, but I think the defense only got them two pick 6s this past yr, and one of those didn't happen til the bowl game against Clemson. He pulled them out of the clutches of defeat against Miss State for sure. Jalen is a great leader and cool headed as they come. Great running game QB but not so much on the throwing game, unless it is short passes. The problem with not being versatile in both, is that a halfway decent defense coordinator can shut you down in a hurry. That's what happened in the Iron Bowl and that's what happened the first half of the championship. Georgia spent all their time figuring out how to stop Jalen and I think was a bit blind sided by putting Tua in.

In short, Jalan has a Tim Tebow decision to make. If he chooses as TT did, he won't be playing much football.

This, this and this!!!

I like the kid and I think he is an amazing athelete but he is not an NFL caliber quarterback, period.

I think Hurts will transfer and redshirt a year giving him 3 years of eligibility. He's a great player with a fantastic attitude but only a good QB. He simply hasn't developed as a passer. Maybe he could develop under another QB coach. Tua was already known to be a great passer before the NC game, but we found out he's also a pretty good scrambler/runner if there isn't another option.

Interesting stats !

I think some people are over shadowing his accomplishments so far

Tua turned in a split second reset his feet and let it go all in one motion. in a game, in OT, for a NC.
He put it on the money hitting WR in stride. He's special.

Which is exactly why he will (and should) transfer IMO. He is very capable of playing the position, and QB's want to play QB, not switch to another position or hold a clipboard. Unfortunately for Hurts, it looks like it is going to be tough to nearly impossible to win the competition over Tua. He's a top10 QB Nationally, there are numerous top 25 caliber teams that would take him in a second.

You make some very valid points about him being a top 10 Quarterback.

This whole thing reminds me of the Montana/Young Years at SF49's. There you had to world class QB that were equally capable of playing at start. I realize this is College and that was the NFL and college time is time sensitive and all. HUGE difference. But it has that same sort of feel.

Looking back on the Championship game TuA came out a hero but look at him.

That one throw that wound up being a touchdown almost wasent.
He almost let the clock run out. Rookie mistake.
That last sack should not have happened.

Pleased as punched as the outcome and could not have done it without him . Don't get me wrong. But some people are putting the cart before the horse here.

Re: Alabama's freshman QB & Jalen Hurts

Tua played better than anyone else that prob could have in that situation. He made some mistakes but who else would have done better in that situation as a true freshman where they have never started, never been in any meaningful situation and to go into a national championship game with 2 quarters left down by 2 touchdowns and do it with such poise? Nobody would be my guess.

Jalen would possibly do good somewhere but he wouldn't be a game changer especially against a team that had a legit defense or on a team that had a bad defense and they needed to put up a lot of points to win. His record wouldn't be 25-2 at any other school that's for sure. People tend to forget to that a lot of his yardage wasn't thru the air it was after the catch on short passes.

I still think Saban will have a quarterback competition thru the summer and we want know the starter till just before the Louisville game. Then again, I could be wrong. Going to be very interesting that's for sure.

I think ur right about Saban ! He will analyze the data on both players examine them both during practice and make the call .

Bingo. He'll look back at the NC game footage. 1st half - 2nd half. How much more data does he need :D ! BTW, I hope Hurts does stay and Saban does a faux QB battle. It could damage the locker room.

It will be Hurts decision helped by a talk with Saban. Stay, and switch to RB. If you want to play QB, you might want to look around.

BTW, one thing that hasn't been mentioned is on one of the TD passes that Tua threw on a scramble, he actually was NOT throwing to Ridley, who came out of nowhere and caught it. So, there was some luck there because it wasn't getting to the intended receiver.
