A friend has been having issues with his muzzleloader and is contemplating getting an air rifle next year tohunt deer with. He is looking at 50cal. Is anyone familiar with these? What is the effective range?
You know that would be a good question to bring up to the wildlife commission! Don't make sense to only allow it during rifle season. Especially when smokeless muzzleloaders shoot easily out to 350-400 yards. After researching, looks like only legal during gun season. Not sure where he saw that it was legal.
That's kind of a silly comment. Thankfully we don't have to resort to archery, muzzleloader, or gun either. Who gets credit for that?Thankfully Trump won. We don't have to resort to air rifles anytime soon.
That's kind of how the conversation started. My muzzleloader was giving me issues and I was contemplating going smokeless. I have been researching possibly getting a remage smokeless barrel. My friend has been wanting an excuse to get a pcp air rifle. I have read where they are good out to 100 yds. Just curious if that is realistic.Have him get a smokeless muzzleloader. That will solve alot of traditional muzzleloader problems.
You are probably correct. Just curious if anyone has killed a deer with one yet.Probably get more traction in the airgun hunting forum.
Trump! He's making deer hunting great again! That's kind of a silly comment. Thankfully we don't have to resort to archery, muzzleloader, or gun either. Who gets credit for that?
Deer hunting isn't great? I was thinking it was pretty awesome. When exactly was it great that we are trying to get back to? I have been hunting deer for 40 years. I need a reference. Was it back when we could only kill does during archery season and the second muzzleloader season back when there was only a few hundred thousand deer in the state? We need to go back to when it was a challenge just to see a deer in the woods much less actually kill one?Trump! He's making deer hunting great again!
That's what I found. I wonder if someone didn't start a rumor about the new regs coming out this year. I also read where the kill zone is smaller. No high shoulder or neck shots. You can hunt with a .35cal or larger but only during regular gun season. I have a .22 cal. PCP that I squirrel hunt with on occasion. Your range is far smaller than with regular gun or muzzleloader
I've not researched it but I wonder what the kinetic energy of the air rifle is compared to other forms. I should think it would be sufficient to take a high shoulder shot. The only reason I wouldn't try a neck shot is the fact that air guns tend to throw a shot once in a while. I don't know if it's true with the big bore gun though. That's what I found. You would need to buy a compressor. The big bore air rifles only get a few shots per tank. Compressors have come down in price. I think he was planning on spending around $1500 for the rifle, compressor, and a couple extra tanks. The pellets aren't cheap either. It's definitely pricey. With the amount of money it would take to get a nice high caliber pcp that could actually and ethically take a deer would be very high. I love to shoot airguns but I don't want all of the headaches, price tags and the numerous amounts of trips to the local fire department(tank fill) so I use a spring piston. The Gamo I have didn't break the budget and it's very very accurate. Can carry it during bow season if I want to as well for small game. Honestly all I do with it is shoot plywood and paper in the backyard and it's one of the most fun things I shoot with the exception of my bows. I have seen the 9mm that Ed Gun West makes take out some coons and it is an eye opener but to step up to deer……ehhh I don't know man. Seems like a new muzzleloader would be the ticket.
I'm not even scratching the legal aspect of this question either. I ain't the one.
