I set up super early this mornin because I knew about where my bird was. I wait and wait on the first gobble and it doesn't come. Well about 6:10 or so a bird flies out of the tree not 40 yards from me. I have no idea if it's a hen or not so I call a little and he gobbles. I'm thinkin it's gonna happen quick but he's in the same spot gobbling. I go quiet and he gets quiet so after about 5 minutes I yelp and he's about 50 yards but I can barely see him. He then walks a hair to the left and is strutting. I have a hen decoy out and there's a mud hole between fields and he just won't cross. I almost pull the trigger several times but I don't because I know it's iffy. After a few minutes of this I convince myself I can kill him and shoot. He doesn't hit the ground, just takes off. I think I hit him with a few pellets but I never found and feathers and I made a circle lookin for him. It was a stupid mistake and I feel like crap for not waitin on him to come closer or just let him walk off. I just got in a hurry because I knew that'd probably be my last bird of the year. Pretty sure I should've let my decoy at home and I think he would've came lookin.

On my way home my daddy says there's a bird gobbling behind him but he has trouble walkin and tells me to come up there. I get there, hear no gobbling but I spot em in the next field over and try to get in position to kill him. He beats me there and walks right back to my daddy who kills him at 30 yards. That brightened my daddy because I know he won't be around forever to kill em. A bad day went to a good day just seeing my old man score!
