Guy I work with got shot in the face over the weekend while turkey hunting his family farm. He was set up on a ridge and his brother in law came up thru the ridge so he waved at him to let him know where he was and his BIL shot him. He got a few pellets in the arm, face, and several in the chest....You just never know!!! Please be careful.... Not trying to stir things up but its just a matter or time before it happens to someone "fanning".

He's very fortunate it wasn't more serious. Lesson learned is to speak to let them know you are there, even if it ruins that hunt.

Thanksgiving dinner conversation could be awkward!

BTW, I actually see fanning (with just the fan and not the full body deke) as not very dangerous, especially in a big field.

If a guy can get shot for waving is arm, I'd say it would be highly likely a guy crawling behind a tail fan could get shot...To each their own I guess... I just simply shared this help increase awareness of dangers in the turkey woods and just because you are hunting private land and may know everyone there, things can still happen in the heat of the moment.

I had a hunting partner in Alabama shot his best friend last year. All experienced hunters. Don't think it can't happen to you.

That sucks, I really hope he's ok. A reminder to whistle or shout when another hunter walks up to you. I remind myself not to wave because that's a sudden movement.

About the tail fan, you can't compare crouched in an open grazed field to sitting in a wooded ridge top. Just use common sense. If you think it's iffy then don't do it

I wonder if the bil was charged with failure to identify game? I mean the goal is to shoot a bearded turkey, not whatever moves by a tree, if you take the time to identify a beard then I don't see this happening!

I tend to agree, but there are so many idiots with guns in the woods anymore that nothing can be taken for granted. Not saying the shooter was an idiot, just referencing others out there who are

Every year my only goal is to not get shot by another hunter.

I'm not getting into the fan debate. You all know my feelings, and safety is one of my issues,

Sadly this is a dangerous sport when in reality it shouldn't be.

Man thats horrible. Im always nervous about that happening, even though it seems so easy to me to ID a turkey from a hunter. But all it takes is one minor slip and the game is over.

its true there are idiots and sometimes you can't be careful enough. If someone does get shot holding a fan in a wide open field, I highly doubt it was an accident. I still won't do it on public land though especially with the influx of new hunters out here lately.

Please explain why you wouldn't do it on public land with an influx or new hunters....You never really know who is around even on private land. Actually most people assume no one is around when they are hunting private but actually you should always assume someone COULD be around....For example anytime I hear a "hen" my first thought is that it could be someone unless of course I can see her...
But anyhow everybody just be safe..

Agreed, and having hunted private land all over the SE and run off countless poachers over the years I think private can be more dangerous because no one expects to encounter another hunter. On public land I expect to be around other hunters, as do most.

Sure anyone can be anywhere. I still would never recommend hiding behind any fan or decoy in the woods, tall grass, or terrain where someone could walk up on you. But if you're crawling off the outside corner of a fence row into a large open cattle field, it's different.

This kind of stuff always tears me up! I'll go ahead and call anybody that shoots another person in the woods a idiot. One of the #1 rules is to identify your target, anybody who shoots at movement in the woods definitely didn't identify their target. A accidentally discharge I could possibly see happening, but to shoulder your gun, point, and pull the trigger at movement is asinine.

And who said there wasn't idiots among us. Anyone nieve (sp) enough to believe one of these "idiots" won' t shoot another idiot crawling around with a turkey fan in front of their face, whether it is woods or open fields, deserves what is coming to them. Hope the guy is alright and if it were me, I would be beating the ever loving piss out of my brother in law. ;) And this is all I have to say regarding idiots :D

I hate that. Turkey hunting is a dangerous sport. Always identify your target before shooting. I never understood people that don't.

For as much as I'm against fanning and wish it was never "discovered", NO ONE deserves to get shot in the face. And, that is all I have to say about that.
