A little sidenote to give some perspective on the type of man Coach Battle was:
During one of his later seasons, he had an offensive lineman (from my memory) that came down with a rare blood disorder that put him in the UT hospital. He was basically paralyzed and totally bedridden. My then wife was working as a nurse at the hospital. She told me that multiple times a week, after Battle left the football complex at close to midnight, that he would stop by the hospital to check on his player. He would usually spend an hour plus just reading to the young man or visiting with him. He asked the nursing staff on those shifts to please make sure that word of those visits didn't make it to the press. He wanted no "credit" for his Christian acts.
And, on a not so nice note, it was my "drunk" neighbor across the street that hired the moving company to go to Battle's house during that last season. The neighbor had a wonderful wife and family, but he was a real POS.
