Bout to throw my gun in the lake

I'll agree that shooting paper is nothing like shooting an animal. But shooting paper has taught me a ton more than just sighting my gun and hunting would have. Yes, the repetitive nature but also trying to focus on a 1" dot or turkey printed out makes the real deal that much easier. 95% of my shots are in a fast paced environment and those little things at the range have helped tremendously. And confidence in my weapon is another bonus.

Big or small, kill em all

I mean we do it for bow hunting all the time. You shoot and shoot and shoot to learn distance, accuracy and muscle memory. Should be the same for shotguns if your not a naturally good shooter.

Comes with experience though but the longer you practice bad habits the harder they are to break

With today's weapons and ammo I really see no reason to miss unless yardage misjudged. Not picking on u cat but my 7 yr old is 2 for 2 on turkeys and I ask her was it hard? She said said no daddy put his head in the red circle and pull the trigger. It really is that simple. You can fix ur problem whatever it is.

You're more of a man than I am!! If I missed one I think I'd have to go to counseling. I do think more shooting would help, even with light target loads in your turkey gun. At the same time nothing can simulate the real action! Get a wife and 6 kids...try telling them you missed! GUT WRENCHING

I make bad bow shots on deer too, and I target practice archery far more than the shotgun. I can't explain it other than some kind of target panic at the most important moment of the hunt. It doesn't happen every time, sometimes I'm calm and make a perfect shot.

Missed another this morning too. Misjudged the yardage bad. He just ran away from me then flew off. I cussed myself good after that one. That's my second this year. This season started great. went 2 for 2 then hit a tree shooting at #3. Haven't been able to get the stink off me since.

my best advice is keep hunting hard because I don't know how to fix the miss problem. Just call in another one and kill him. I'm gonna have to try shooting a bunch of paper in the future and see if it helps. Hopefully will buy a few boxes of shells when they go on sale.

I honestly think you are probably looking for the flopping bird at the same time you are pulling the Trigger

Buy a case or two of the cheap bird shot and practice ain't no way in he'll I would practice with 3" or 3.5" I like my shoulder more than that

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

Oh I plan on it. I never give up. Hopefully the ball bounces my way soon.

Yes just use bird shot. Shoot from your normal hunting positions and visualize the hunt. Don't just go out and pull the trigger a bunch of times. Focus in form and run the hunts through your head. Get a routine down prior to pulling the trigger for checks. Get to where you do the checks fast and almost without thinking about them

It's too late to bother with this year but I'm gonna have to try that next year before turkey season.

The extremely heavy trigger pull on most shotguns (usually 8 to 10 pounds) probably cause more misses than anything else.

I agree 100%. Shotguns aren't rifles and yet they must be aimed like one.

I think people don't want you to be that guy that sights his guns in once a year and wounds game and misses. Practice will help. Look how much better you have got with the. Is over the last couple of years because you practice and gain muscle memory

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?

Yes it happens but man you have a fairly high count of misses and big misses. You really need to spend some time at the range getting muscle memory on good form and keep visualizing shots on target. You have to sure up form and technique so it becomes 2nd nature rather then thinking about it.

Not bashing you at all just seems you haven't really corrected the issue and it's still ongoing at a pretty high rate.

Catman this is great advice.

Coming from my archery perspective where I practice year round at over a 100 yards and have national tournaments.

There is nothing more important than muscle memory.

I missed my 1st bird this year. Strangest thing ever to me, since I've killed over a 100 long beards in my life.

Nobody is giving ya a hard time, but it's time for a fix after this many misses. There's no denying your doing the turkey hunting thing rite and doing a good job calling them in. Good luck

Agreed but having shot guns for 27years I can tell you with certainty that repetitive practice makes those times much easier. It's all about muscle Memory and training you body to do good form without thinking about it

Having said that you do whatever you want to do, my only point is you have had the same issues at a high percentage for a few years now so maybe try something else to correct it rather then adding band aids like scopes and sights to fix the issue.

Maybe so, I wouldn't know cause I only shoot a handful of times each year. All I do know is it's entirely different shooting a tom than shooting a picture of one.

Hang I'm there brother
I had a problem years ago and I got to the point where I would talk myself through the shot
Like you I did the same wth my bow
It got much better with patience
Like Ren said try practicing in the off season heck you might try killing squirrels
Using your turkey gun anything to get you killing and not just turkeys
Good luck
