UT is a 34 point dog next Saturday. 34 points!!!!! An ugly, perhaps even historic loss against Bama is a foregone conclusion at this point. If I'm Currie, I let Butch own it. I don't roll an interim out to get absolutely killed in his first showing. But Butch gets flown home separate from the team, separation papers in hand.

I still like the thoughts of running backs coach Robert Gillespie as interim. His group is the only bright spot on this team.

Vol fans. Petrino is an overrated huckster who just lost to Boston College. He's the coach at Louisville. Need I really say more. Have some self respect.
 
So, if I was this UT AD, this is what I'd do. Gruden is out - he's got $6.5 million reasons for 3-4 months of work a year for why he doesn't want to coach. He hasn't coached in what 10 years and has only a briefest of stints at the college level in his career. Chip Kelly left college because he doesn't want to recruit. Not a good attitude for a college coach. UT could go for the "hot coach" at some Group of 5 or FCS school, but isn't that who you would be firing. Butch wasn't the PJ Fleck or Tom Herman of 2012 or whenever he was hired, but he was sort of the Scott Frost or Jeff Brohm of that year. Plus, a Scott Frost is probably going to Nebraska, Jeff Brohm and PJ Fleck are probably staying put for now. Is Dino Babers now a "hot coach" again? Now I'm no expert, and maybe you would want a Mike Leach in Knoxville, but you can probably count on one hand without using your thumb the number of Power 5 head coaches of all of the teams in the upper half of each of the 5 conferences who might be enticed to move to Knoxville. Leach might be one of those guys. But the guy UT should really try hard to hire is Mark Dantonio. LSU hired his former boss from the same school. He can definitely build a program in a tough conference, but almost more importantly, at a school where recruiting can be a challenge. He can definitely develop 3 star players into early round NFL draft picks. He's one heck of an in-game coach. Like Saban, he would probably like to get out from the shadow of UM from a program and recruiting standpoint. Yes, it hasn't turned out well for him yet, but he's one guy who would relish going up against one of his coaching mentors every year. He's 3-3 against Meyer and I think Vol fans would take that record against Saban. He's also no nonsense and Vol fans wouldn't have to put up with all of the trite jargon.

That is, of course, after Gruden officially turns us down. He was in Knoxville over the weekend, you know ;) :D !
 
Retain Butch as Recruiting Coordinator and hire Gruden.....
