rsimms,
Or anyone else that knows:

What is the formula that you use to figure the weight of a catfish?
I have seen you mention it a few times and it seems to be very accurate.

Does it work on all catfish or just the larger ones?

Thanks.

I use this formula: length x girth x girth /800 = weight For instance, on a fish 36 inches long with a 22 inch girth: 36 x 22 x 22 /800 = 21.78 pounds

I have crossed checked this formula numerous times against reliable scales and I have never found it it to be off by more than 5%, plus or minus. And usually that variance is a result of not-so-accurate measurements. Sometimes an accurate girth is tough to get perfect. BTW, length measurement is nose to tip of tail (not the fork).

BTW, if you download an App on your smartphone called Fisherman's Tacklebox, it has a built-in calculator that uses that exact formula. You just fill in the "length" & "Girth" blanks and click "Calculate." Of course it's easy to do the same thing on your smartphone calculator without the App.
