What do you prefer to get pics this time of year? I usually seem to get more mature bucks over minerals, but this year they haven't shown up yet. Thinking about putting out some corn to see if that helps. I know they are still there.

I have been dumping hundreds of pounds of corn all over the lease this year and have yet to photograph a buck that's over a year and a half old. Tomorrow I'm buying a couple of Trophy Rocks and moving the cameras out of field edges and into the deep woods. My theory being that as hot as it is they are under the canopy in the deeper areas with no appetite. We'll see how it works out.

Try both. I have seen areas where you cannot get a mature buck to come to corn, and then just the reverse, you cannot get deer to come to salt licks.

I put out trophy rocks and they wont touch em, but they love ice cream salt...

I've heard good things about ice cream salt.

I gave them the buffet. I think the true answer is simply wait. In September the mature bucks will begin to break out of bachelor groups and move into those areas where they will remain until the rut. I am guaranteed to kill a monster because of this. right? Right?

Must be a lil behind, but what the heck is ice cream salt?

The salt used in old hand-crank ice cream makers.

They love it. Don't know why.. Pour it in the lick 10 pounds at a time.. I know when I was a kid there was nothing no better than eating that salty ice while waiting on the ice cream..

This is from a trace mineral lick from 2010 with nothing added to it until now this year. this was a new lick last year and i had a lot of traffic on it. as you can see they were pounding it. this hole is 6 inches deep at its deepest and 6 ft wide by 3 ft. this is 100#'s of fresh trace mineral. all in all i have placed about 400#'s here now in 16 months of use.

Deer are attracted to peanut butter, for whatever reason.

One Trophy Rock per year, and the deer have dug quite a hole:

BSK, how long have you used that particular hole?
Wondering because I have done something similar but with no where near the result.

I used that mineral lick mix thats all over the internet and have gotten over 3500 pics in the last month and a half. just refresh it every couple months and it will last you a while, the directions i saw say a coffee can of each and 2 of the trace minerals raked into the dirt in a 4'circle...all feed grade additive you can find at the co op. i also spread a 5 gallon bucket of corn every 2 weeks or so and usually all that is gone the first night. and of course the best advice is to locate this in a well used area..tried it in a area that i wanted to hunt but the deer didn't like that spot as much as i did.

50lb bag dicalcium phospate
50lb bag stock salt
2 50lb bags trace minerals
50 lb bag dried molases

I think corn is better in the short term it brings deer in quicker but once a mineral site is well established it seems to consistently produce pictures and a very high percentage will be bucks.
