Crying shame

What ammo and choke do you use? For years I used a modified choke and rarely missed a bird. A few years ago I switched to a "turkey" choke and missed more birds than I care to admit to. I switched back to a modified choke and haven't missed again.

I missed A LOT of turkeys before I put a scope on my gun. Highly recommend some type of optic.

This.
Shooting a turkey choke and Longbeards, it is more like a rifle. No margin for error.
I resighted my 835 with FastFire this year and it was off by 2 clicks right and 2 clicks down. That is how accurate it can get.
BUT, that shot pattern is devastating to a turkey's head.

Stinks man, I know how you feel. Missed quite a few looking over the barrel. Are you trying to film these hunts? Put the camera down if you are until you figure out what's happening.

If it makes you feel better, I shot a sapling instead of turkey Sunday afternoon.

I set up, called him across a field and he poked his head up where I wasn't anticipating his head being. I rushed and mowed down three one inch trees.

Calm down, take your time and aim. 90% of misses with a gun comes from rushing it. It took me a long time to figure it out. Plus, no matter what, you're still going to miss at times.

Btw, with all of the $$$ you've spent in shells on those misses the past few years, you could probably have bought you a nice red dot, etc. :) !

You are just a pup in the sport of Turkey hunting. Just let it go, not the last miss you will ever have. Believe me, I've had it happen lots of times. Keep hunting, wont be long you will get another chance.

The beard buster sights are cheaper than a good red dot or scope and work very well for me. You have to center the front sight in the ring of the rear sight so it helps keep your head down. https://deadringerhunting.com/product/beard-buster/
i have an almost identical sight, it might need adjustment, I think it shoots a hair too high.

Dang bud, hate the rough day, you'll get'em next time.
I wouldn't delete the footage you have, I know its hard to watch now but later on you will wish you still had it.
I wouldn't listen to these folks around here and set that camera down. just bring me along and let me do the shooting for ya

I'm gonna set the camera down most likely for the next time out but will pick it back up at some point

Jonathan, I just dug out one of the safe queens that might be worth a try. It is a Rem. 870 3" (short, rifle sight smooth barrel with screw in turkey choke) with a 1.5-4.5 scope on it. The scope has the circle and crosshair reticle on it that has really worked well for me over the years.

Why don't you run up here tomorrow and give it a try. It may be the slumpbuster you are looking for. It is a backup to a backup turkey gun, so chances are it won't leave the safe all season.

It was sighted in, but would need to be checked with a shot or two before you hit the woods.

It isn't a "pretty" gun as it has the cloth camo tape butt to muzzle, so there won't be ANY need to be concerned with a scratch. IMO, the 870s were made more to be used and abused than to look at, anyway.

If it works for you, we might be able to work out a deal on the scope after the season, but for now just a loan to a fellow turkey hunter.

Sorry about your miss but I have said it before and will say it again practice, practice, practice. I don't think I remember you shooting much other than on a hunt. So buy some bird shot and go shoot a little skeet or something it's fun and good practice to get used to the guns kick and trigger. I know you haven't missed with your rifle but a little practice with it also would never hurt anything

Thank you scn that's a very nice offer of you. I might take you up on it, but first would like to run a few rounds thru my gun since I adjusted the sight today. I think it was shooting a tad high, plus I watched the video and realized I shot a moving bird...

Well SCN offered you what i can't but that is what i suggest.

Either get a mount like Gravey's and put a scope on your gun or if it is tapped, slap a weaver base on it and mount a scope. the scope i have is a 4X32 and has made a world of difference. I missed a couple before i got it, but since i got it, I have done good.

It will be a lot cheaper than a Burris speed bead, and it will help you focus on the head.
