• Help Support TNDeer:

For you that have killed deer that was CWD positive

Every deer we have killed in Hardeman Co looked healthy. No visible signs of CWD. That being said I can tell you this year something is off there. Personally I think it's knocked the numbers back quite a bit. We'll see how the next couple years go. It really sucks as we've passed on 115-120" deer hoping to get some wallhangers and bam this year things went down.
It is hard to tell what is impacting the herd when additional tags are being provided.

See the post from Bull TN above, just makes for more confusion. Hard to know what to believe. So now reading what he says, I should not even give it to the dogs. Fwiw, the dogs go on walks on our property, often where I know deer go through, what's to keep them from picking it up on a walk? Dogs pick up scent and lick stuff. We hunt on the farm we live on, so if it is here, it is here.

The "experts" say not to use the same knives that you use in your kitchen. They also say to clean your knives with bleach 50/50 solution. I have never used bleach on my knives. What are others here cleaning their knives with?

Another question then comes, what about cattle? I did a little internet research, and no jump recorded that I could find from cwd in deer to cows, but they often use the same areas and if the prions left in the ground can pass on from dogs to deer, or possibly to people, why not cows?

What about water table and well water. Could worry a person sick with what ifs....
These arguments and ones similar to them are what I used to tell my PHD FIL that the science doesn't know any of the answers. It is merely panic to cause panic. Hunting has lost popularity. I am sure they think this will be the harbinger of death on the sport. CWD has been around since the 60's there are no known cases in humans. People have been eating infected animals for years and it does not jump to humans.

The logic that it may is based on mad cows disease jumping to humans in the 90's in Europe. There is no correlation between the two, just speculation that if it happened with mad cow, then it can happen with CWD.

The reason this scare tactic may work is, 1. We have greater reach with information due to social media, and 2. People do not want to take any risk with their loved ones.

#2 is the only one I cannot argue against, so it is a personal choice. It will be here in Mid TN soon enough, so I will have to make my choice then. I butcher my own and I am not throwing away knives and what not if a deer tests positive, so I don't know what the answer is. Maybe just hunt and cut the head off a buck, let it rot out on my property and collect the skull later? Doesn't look like any of these CWD positives are being eaten, so I guess they are just being shot and dumped.

206 people got MCD from around 38 million that ate infected meat.
I was stationed in Germany when mad cow disease made its appearance. Now I never got it and never showed any type of symptoms, but I have been unable to donate blood ANYWHERE since then just because I was there when it happened.

What about migrating vulchers, water fowl depositing prions from fecal matter and those same species dying also what sediments washing from other parts of the country carrying prions?!?
There's no getting away from it. It's here to stay.
Straight from a federal game wardens mouth. "CWD thing is a joke. Yes it's here but not much at all we can do about it, but it's mainly a money grab from states".

Wow, well that settles it. Tell all the PhD's that specialized in and spend every day working on this stuff that you and a game Warden that probably never say through Biology 101 in college have thrown in the flag. Thanks for wrapping this up for us.

My opinion is just like your azz hole.

Where's your credentials? Ball state community College?

Awe, I'm just an ole licensed professional civil engineer in multiple states and an owner of my firm. I graduated from Auburn, not Ball State, but you were close... About as close as you are on your CWD knowledge.

Any truth to TWRA loosing federal funding for cdw research if CWD was not detected in Tennessee? I believe it has been here for a lot longer than most think. And I can see our government digging harder and harder to find an issue with just about anything that appears normal for people these days.

I do believe i would have left out the civil engineer line. You almost had us believing the sky was falling till that remark.
And i will admit i am no expert at CWD but im not going to guess on it either.
I live on the thought of i will go however the good lord sees fit after all we are living under his rule and if thats tbe way i go then i lived a great life!!!!

"the processor probably didn't switch knives"
I would think it a little naive if you believe that the processors are breaking down their operation and cleaning it down between every deer. I would be skeptical that you really get your, and only your meet back.

Interesting thread, but how would you know if it was positive? I'm on the CWD testing and results page. It shows the date of my harvest, 11/15/2021. Today is 12/17 and the result still says Pending. Replace a Buck? If I don't get results until the season is over what use is that? It shows almost 3600 Pending results with a harvest date older than two weeks.

If CWD ever starts affecting cattle we'll see some serious research start up and quite possibly a vaccine developed especially for domestic animals....

It'll be a tough nut to crack though Scrapie has been around in sheep for a long time and we haven't been able to get a handle on it....
