Food Plots Frost Seeding

Spread 160# of mix yesterday. Tried for 10# to acre but think it was more like 12-13# as I ran out of seed before finishing. Picking up another 50# today & do it Thur or Fri. My mix is 25% Durana, 25% Red & 50% arrowleaf. I do same in fall planting at 16#/acre, but use Crimson then instead of Red. Red is smaller seed than Crimson, so use it for frost seeding.

Have always done it by hand so I could better control rate. I bought a new Spin tech seeder last year for UTV and thought I'd try it on the clover. Used a feeler gage and set gate at 1/32" and went 5 mph. Gonna increase speed to 7 mph with this next bag & see if I can get closer to 10#/acre. Don't think I can close the gate up much tighter.

Update:
Calculated acreage that I spread yesterday with Spin Tech & came out to be 10.32#/acre so right on target. Highly impressed with this seeder!

Got all my perennial clover plots frost seeded today. Around 7 acres total - fields / small clearings / around fruit and chestnut trees. Also ran the saw for about 3 hours creating a 70y by 50y clearing for a clover plot and where I'll plant about 15 chestnut trees come fall. I'm exhausted. Working on that clearing again tomorrrow am

Oh and since when did a 50lb bag of ladino cost $243????? It's always been high, but dadgum! My jaw dropped at the lady at coop

That sounds like some serious work!

And even Crimson Clover - which used to be cheap - has gotten really expensive.

Sticker shock everywhere. I got quotes last week for 7K pounds of 0-20-20. Wayne County CoOp was nearly 700T bulk with buggy. 17-17-17 was $19/bag & pelletized lime was $300/T for 7K pounds. AG lime was $60/T spread.

Small feed & seed store locally 0-20-20 was $590/T bagged, 17-17-17 $15.50/bag, pelletized lime was $275/T.

Had 300# of clover mix done for frost seeding. 25% Durana/25% Red/50% Arrowleaf & it was $165/bag. Finished it Monday. Gotta love it is all I can say...

Question:
For you guys that frost seed Crimson, what kind of results do you get? I've always shied away due to seed size.

Hard to tell on the crimson because it has come up SO WELL the last 2 years from the fall planting the year prior…and reseeded itself.

If you can get the pure seed, I think you'd be much better off. Only place I've found that has it is Knox Seed Co in Knoxville when I'm there seeing in-laws

Oh I never got around to it Sunday morning - I was so sore! The plan is to spend about 3-4 more hours this coming Saturday morning. And then still another 3-4 hours another time before spring green up. I've got around 50 chestnut trees to plant this fall (15 in that area), but want some clover/lime/fertilizer down there first to get established
