Gag on a mouth call

There's no telling how many mouth calls I've bought that end up in the garbage as soon as I get home. I just can't do it without gagging. I'm watching Primos turkey hunting now and it bout makes me gag watching them use one

I don't gag on them but for the life of me I cannot purr properly...I have been steady at it trying to learn for 5 years!!!!!

I kind of had the same issue but found that certain tape shapes don't have the effect on me. I can run Houndstooth, Hooks, Woodhaven calls without having any issues. I think because they are a little bit wider and I can run them a little bit farther forward on the roof of my mouth.
 
Even though many will argue, evidentally I have a small mouth. I tried countless diaphragm calls and had the same experience—constant gagging and can't get a decent sound. I did try a youth size, Hook's Custom Calls, and they fit perfect in my mouth and I got a decent sound almost immediately (and it only has gotten better with time)I've killed several using them. You may want to try that.
 
yeah hooks is always a good option if you like small tape. They have the smallest Ive used other then a youth frame. Woodhaven on the other side have some of the largest tape sizes I have used. Personally i cant run hooks due to the small size but a lot of people love them.

I tried watching a Realtree show the other day and had the same result. But it wasn't the mouth calling. It was the rubber turkeys and reaping. Watching Dave Owens makes me queasy sometimes. Looks like he might swallow his any second.

I can't consistently purr on one either. Every once in a while I'll get one out that I think sounds good but I'll be dammed if I can't replicate it right after. Maybe one day.

To the OP, I agree try different brands and keep at it. Primos used to make one that had half a plastic dome on top to help people tolerate it. I had one and used it for a couple seasons. Can't remember what it was called, I want to say Thunderdome but I don't think that was it lol.
