Gay 270

Hopefully I remember all of them but over the last 45 years I've taken deer with a 243, 30-30, 308, 270, 280 (my favorite...), 7 mag, 30-06, 300 WM, 50 cal ML, 12 & 20 gauge slugs, and my next few deer will be taken with either a Bergara B-14 Wilderness Hunter in 6.5 CM or a 'soon to be purchased' rifle in 360 Buckhammer...and I'm confident that they'll both deliver end results exactly like the well over a hundred shot before...a dead deer. Shoot whatever gun you like because it really doesn't matter too much to the deer.

The next rifle I really wanna get and fool with is the 280AI.

I hate long actions but that's one I'd love to have

That'd be sweet....I have a unicorn...in 1992 I bought a Remington 700 Stainless Mountain Rifle in 280 Remington...its an ADL model and they only made those particular rifles in 1992 and 1993 and probably most that were sold were either 270 or 30-06 (bottom rifle in the attached pic)

I handload it so I can get 'pretty close' to factory AI speeds...but a handloader could get 'pretty close' to 7 Mag speeds from an AI.

My dad bought me a very nice .270 when I was a young adult. I killed a handful of deer with it. It did just fine till I started to hunt brushier areas where I was seeing more deer on public land. Then I lost a deer. Then I lost a few deer.

I've lost the last 5-6 deer I've attempted to shoot with it. Mostly does but they are still creatures that I don't want wounded. Most deer jumped flinched or bucked then would run like their hooves were on fire.

I really did try to get my confidence back with that sweet .270. It shot great at the range. Then I'd miss a deer or couldn't tell if I hit it or not. I was field hunting the last time I pulled her out. Wide open shot maybe 120 yards.

The last doe I shot went straight up into the air about 7 ft then landed on her side with a thud. I thought awesome she's down. I briefly looked away and reloaded and before i could get back on her, She hopped up and I never saw her ever again. Just a chunk of meat or a bit of hair and Always an extremely poor blood trail. It's a safe queen now and it's been retired for the foreseeable future.

I've been using a .243 in fields or a 220 rifled slug for thickets and both have been doing a better job for me dirt napping deer within eyesight.
