Anyone hunt with these? I have used the 240 grain bullets with horrible results on deer. I did not even know they were made in the 300 grain until I saw some today in the store. The 240's are very accurate in my rifle but I have wounded and lost deer while using them. :(

I use Hornady 300 gr hp/xtp rifle bullet it a .458 I buy them bulk from local gun shop and have them order me some .458 mmp sabot while am there. and it's better than the 300 gr hp/xtp pistol bullet. yes It's more work but worth it.

I used them a few years ago in my TC New Englander. Grouped great with 90 grains of Pyrodex.

I'm shootin 240 grains in my TC Omega now. No complaints.

I've used the Hornady XTP 240 gr with 100 gr of FFg or 777 to kill a couple of truckloads of deer. Most were dead in their tracks and I never lost a deer with those bullets.

I agree with you Gramps. I lost a total of 5 deer shooting those 240gr xtp bullets. I switched to Barnes expanders and they drop every single deer in it's tracks. I'll never shoot another bullt made by hornady again.

I have had mixed success with the 240gr XTPs in years past....They either went clean through or wound up on the the other side. As long as it was a broadside shot, it left a trail or they were DRT.

I switched the the 300gr SSTs and these bullets haven't let me down. They flat out work.

Hornady makes a great bullet....some of them are not setup for the speeds the muzzleloaders push today.

x2. However, I don't think my limit has ever been a truckload ( :D ). You must have connections...

My experience was about the same with 777 and pyrodex- a pile of dead deer (over the years). When I started with the Savage, I pushed that bullet hard.

So, take the following FWIW-

A GREAT bullet at medium velocity. My only suggestion is to keep them between 1,500 and 1,700 IMPACT velocity. Push them to 2,300+ and you'll see a volleyball-sized impact hole and no exit.

A great bullet when one considers design parameters...

I started shooting them last year, they grouped moa for me at 100 yards and they're great on broadside shots, giving great expansion, but they're not the best on penetration. For the price, they're hard to beat. I switched to a more solid bullet this if any head-on shot presents itself again. (325 ftx)

Here is what I shoot in my Knight MK-85.

Stay on topic. OP asked about the xtp - not Barnes.

Sorry about that, I forget some people have a one track mind and can only discuss one bullet at a time. Was just throwing out a suggestion other than the Hornady to see if he was interested. Sorry to get off topic and confuse you (Keeper of the Muzzleloading Forum) or anyone else.

Isn't the 240 the xtp mag and the 300 is just plain xtp? You don't have to go all the way to 300, they also have the 250 in plain xtp. I was always told the mag had the most problems coming apart at high speed. Going from 240 all the way up to 300 you get 25 percent increase in recoil.
