Have you heard them gobbling in the distance, only to come in and realize it's just a big azz jake with a full gobble? Had so much fun yesterday morning, although he never strutted he definitely had a deep voice for his age. He was so close I could see his nubs and knew he wasn't a tom with a 5" brush. The sad part was about 30 minutes later as I got up to go gather my decoys there REALLY was a longbeard not 20 yards behind me. DANGIT!

I dont base it entirely off the beard, called one in one morning early and passed when he got in range because of a stub beard. Thought for sure he was a jake until he walked out and strutted, he had a full fan! Ended up shooting him and he had beard rot.

Happened to me Sunday morning, I called one hot off the roost gobbled the whole way to me, had a loud, full, deep gobble, gets about 30 yards and starts strutting and I realized he was a jake, fun to watch though.

I haven't killed a jake in a few years, but that doesn't mean I won't if I feel like it.

I would rather kill a gobbling jake which is playing the game, than a silent 2 yr old that just slips in.

If he wants to play like a big boy, he can die like a big boy :D !
