Congrats and thanks for sharing! I nearly laughed out loud on the Kermit costume. :)

You can borrow it if you'd like. It's quite the outfit and the ladies love it :rotf:

I'll take your word on it but appreciate the offer. :tu:

Man I'm glad you're posting a few more kill stories these days. That's a great one, and an absolute monarch of a bird. No telling how many clutches he has sired. You've probably hunted or killed his descendants over the years.

Congrats!

I'm also curious whether this was public or private. A turkey like that (visible, vocal, and violent) wouldn't make it past opening weekend on the public land I'm familiar with.

He was on public land, I don't hunt private stuff here any more as most farms are too small and get too much pressure. The public land hunters ride atv's on the mountain tops and are so far away from birds like this they never know they're there. Plus to get to his world is a heck of a hike, people are lazy it seems.

Congrats!

I thought you had said before that you don't mess with season wreckers :D ?

The challenge of a SW gets the best of everybody!

Setterman - curious what the weather was like in your neck of the woods yesterday morning?

For us here in the SW portion of the state, it was a pretty good morning, especially for May, with low around 55, low humidity, and no wind, but with sun up, it quickly got warm and in the mid 80s.

I suspect you had cooler temps where you hunted, which I prefer. It seems the NE quadrant of the state would be a dream to hunt last two weeks compared to the SW where I live. I am referring to temps/humidity only.

What say you?

Saturday was muggy and pretty warm at daylight, in the 60's with overcast skies. It got dang warm by afternoon with highs in the low 80's.

Yesterday morning was cool, around 54 with drizzle and wind, until about 8:30. After that it was gorgeous low humidity and clear skies around 74.

Usually it doesn't get too hot during the season and the morning always have a cool feel. However, climbing mountains at 80 brings on the heavy sweat

That field monarch was a worthy adversary even for the master. The only thing harder to kill is a silent bird! I love the chess match you played and this close to the end of the season, you went for broke and got checkmate. Congrats on a great bird.

For him to still be toting 1.5 inches of spur, even with being worn down, I would be willing to bet this was "at least" his 5th Spring. Impossible to ever tell of course, but I'd put money on it. Congrats
