Is this a snort-wheeze?

Agree with this. Have heard deer sneeze before. Actually had a doe sneeze right behind us during the juvenile hunt and it had my son laughing.

I've seen/herd deer sneeze quite often. That is not a sneeze.

Dunno, I am not an expert, just going on my experience, and it have heard a lot of animals sneeze. Maybe it was a snort snort without a wheeze like mentioned by another member, definitely an exhalation of air.....

That's a buck "sniff" according to my app of deer calls. And this is the definition the app gives:

Buck Sniff
Deer make this sound to intimidate other deer and prevent fights. A rut crazed buck often makes this call when confronted with a rival. This sound can send a smaller buck running from the area.

I've only heard a snort wheeze a handful of times, but each time there was no mistaking what it was. And every time I've heard it the offending buck was in the posture that your buck was in. So I am going to guess that Lt. Dan is correct.

It is and it's a challenge. I saw video on YouTube where a guy was talking about the vocalizations but I forget who and I didn't see it in my saved stuff.
