Wes's reply on the thread about the fanning hunters getting shot got me thinking.... He stated that people 'reaping' usually take body shots on the birds (I suppose because they are so close? ). I honestly have never watched any 'reaping' videos, so I pulled some up on youtube to see what how folks are doing it....

This is the first video I watched

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wvcczx5nJw

Pretty brutal... Lots of body shots up close, a few head shots, and what looks like quite a few crippled birds as well... Is this normal? Is this 'reaping'??? Looks extremely unethical. Many of the birds definitely react differently than those I've shot with head and neck shots. Wes's comment about birds in the background getting sprayed unintentionally also looks to be happening in quite a few of the snippets. Sure, we all miss and even cripple birds on occasion, but this looks to be excessive.

Not sure what is worse... random body shots at 10 yards, or shooting at birds at 50 yards plus....

If this is normal for 'reaping', I'm all in favor of banning it.

It's an infomercial. I have seen it a few times and don't like that video because of the shots they show and promote. I would never pay for a decoy to "scoot" behind...if I want to fan a gobbler I'm going to hold up a tail fan from another bird I killed, it works just as good and is free.

The one guy tried to grab the turkey by the legs before attempting (and failing) to shoot it and then throwing his gun. He has clearly never had to grab a crippled but live turkey. They are real strong. I would give anything if he had gotten spurred in the mouth.

I've been spurred grabbing a dead turkey that was still flopping and yes they're very strong. But I'm still dumb enough I would possibly try to grab one if he got that close to me.

It has been years since I have "initially" grabbed a leg/spur, especially if one is moving/flopping. I always grab the wing and walk a distance, then switch over to the leg, or better yet, my paracord turkey tote, for the remainder of the walk to the truck.

And y'all wonder I loathe this stuff and the breed of hunters who lap it up. Pathetic excuse for "hunting"

I concur. There's a difference (IMO) in using buffered plated shot, or camo, or calls than this decoy and reaping thing. I must confess that I used a strutter decoy last week when my buddy came to hunt with me. First time I ever used a decoy. He won it at a DU auction last year. The birds ran to the decoys with reckless abandon without looking left or right. Very very very easy and it took no skill whatsoever. I have taken many youngsters (sometimes with their dad), and they all get hooked when I take them, then they start watching YouTube videos and see virtually everyone using a strutter and go out and buy one. They have no idea how to call, no idea about turkey habits, no idea about woodsmanship. They look at me in awe almost, wondering how can I kill turkeys without decoys. Decoys are legal, but I just think they go over a line.

I've never tried it but I'm just crazy enough to try and catch a live bird if I could get close enough, lol. And yes, I've picked up many a bird and know how they go through the death flop so I'd be prepared clothing wise. As far as shooting one I don't see the point of body shooting a bird that close and ruining the meat. If I couldn't get a head shot there wouldn't be a shot taken.

I saw a video on here a few weeks back and the guy body shot the turkey. that was the first one I had ever known for sure it was a body shot.

I didn't watch this, because I didn't want to waste time and watch something that would make me mad.

I know a lot of times, people resort to this while afield and maybe they have the double full choke on their gun so changing it may be impossible since most don't carry another choke with them, but If you are going to use this method as your first choice, then why wouldn't you use an improved cylinder or a modified choke. If they are that close, it is like shooting a rabbit, except you know the turkey is there and don't really jump him.

Made it thru about 20 seconds of that video. This TV hunting is just out of hand and the guys responsible for this kind of content are complete and utter douchebags.

So, what's the deal with these body shots? Is it because the birds are so close that the shotgun pattern is too tight for a head shot? Is it a game to make the shot as close as absolutely possible? From a consumption stand point, you're intentionally ruining meat. I'm am 100% NOT down with the overall direction of turkey hunting and it's wanna be TV and social media stars who are driving this direction.

My thoughts too

It amazes me that these people are willing to put these videos on the internet. I would like to think that most hunters would feel the same way I do about it. I'm not 100% against someone fanning but getting closer every time I see some of these videos. I am however 100% against these guys taking bad shots and it is inexcusable and they should be banned from hunting for life.

I posted this video because honestly, I do not watch turkey hunting shows. Turkey hunting is all about the chess game... I make a move, the bird counters, I counter again, he counters, etc, etc, etc until one of us wins the match. Watching turking hunting videos trying to capture that chess game is impossible... just too boring for television. It may even be more boring than watching golf...

That being said, IS this the norm? Or are the videos on youtube just showing a bunch of jacklegs? Is the goal to pull the birds to 5 yards then blast them in the center of mass? Good grief, I DON"T want a bird within 10 yards... too likely to get busted, and my pattern hasn't opened up enough for the head/neck shots I take.

I body shot 1 bird at 7 yards once.... that was the year I switched to a red dot instead of just the bead. I didn't account for the fact that my bore was a couple inches below the dot at that close distance, and when I aimed just above the waddles, it completely blew his crop and the top 1/5 of the breasts off. Lots of wasted meat :(

This is the goal and the jacklegs that do this relish everything you see in that horrid video. It's a pathetic culture that's invading our sport sadly. I'd probably come to blows with any of those folks if I had to be around them.
