Killing birds after flydown?

Killed over 300 burds (for Setterman).

Ive set on roosts,called to a flock,got in front of hens and toms,crawled,swam,talked to single and multi toms,kee-keed,clucked,yelped,purred,cut,kee-kee ran,used decoys,no decoys,blow-ups,stills,used man-made blinds,live blinds,stumps,barns,cows....left out several items.

Just saying...whatever works.

Been busted more times than Ive killed...but I'll do whatever I think will work on that certain hunt.

Chase or hang tight...both will wurk...do what you feel...and if doesnt wurk...learn from it.

But always remember...you're in their TERRITORY.

I think like this...how would a turkey kill me in my house?

That's a pile of birds, watch out I am catching up ;)

If a turkey wanted to kill me it would be easy, wait by the couch.

For whatever reason, I suck at calling birds off the roost and killing them. I think 2 of the twenty or so birds I have called in or killed have been off the flydown. Its not for the lack of being on birds at daylight either. Im on roost birds practically every morning.

I'm no expert by any means, but I think I can answer this one.

Sounds like to me, you have been watching to many hunting shows!! LOL...

Killing a bird off the roost is RARE!! only once have I ever called one in off the roost. Just was a perfect situation. We were in the right place for them to fly down to. They were multiple gobblers and I acted like I was the first hen on the ground. Then I got in a vocal fight when a boss hen, cutting her off every time she opended her mouth. The mulitple gobblers could not stand it, and one came away from the group.

Out of the 15 birds I have called in, only two has been with in two hours of daylight. 2 has been between 10 and 12 and the rest has been after noon. I only hunt mountains and wood areas, never around fields. If your are like me, they are so many hens the gobblers don't have to come to you until the hens leave the bird your after.

Unless it is very early seaon or very late season, the hens will roost with the gobblers. The gobblers know the hens are there, no reason to come to you when they have their hens with them.

This is why between 10 and 2 is really the best time for me to be in the woods. Once the hens leave, it can be easy to call them in!!!!

ive been doing this since it opened in my county in 1986, ive learned alot of thing and killed my share, i dont have the trouble of killing birds off the roost,i know where he is going or where he is going to put his feet 75% of the time[unless its a new place]being familiar with the territory and getting in close is the biggest factor[imo] im gonna say that over the last 10 years[after ive finally learned what i was doing]2 out of three comes to the end of the barrel with in the first hour of light.now keep in mind 75% of the time im within 50-75 yards of where his feet hit the ground.scout and watch their daily habits just like deer

Setter- I cant get you fired up this year about anything.

I'm still thinking...I'll strike a nerve sooner or later.

Heres a video of one we got a few years ago. He flew down into the top right of the field and we were able to call him into the decoys. I edited the video because it took him a while. He stayed to the left of that hay ring for 15 minutes, the only place we couldn't get a shot, until the hens flew down. Another gobbler comes into the upper right of the field. The bird that has been hanging to our left makes a move toward the strutting decoy, then the 835 took over. I have had good luck with decoys with roosted birds. We were quiet after the shot to see what the other gobbler would do. Dates blocked because I don't trust my camera dates.

Amazing! That's...what it's all about! I'm ready for opening day.

Pretty laid back so far this year, nothing really eating at me offline to spill out via the forum.

Looking forward to a good year in the woods, and just ready for it to get here.
