loud calling?

To each their own, and whatever works best for you is how I look at this.

I used to call super loud and super aggressively. However, I found over time I had much more success by playing it coy, and being patient. The main thing that really shifted the odds in my favor was becoming a tactician at getting ultra close before making the first peep to a bird. When I say close, I mean pushing the envelope on getting busted or being in the perfect position.

When you get close, sparingly calling is deadly.

The loud stuff works great on 2 year old birds, or birds that are alone and lonely. It can have serious issues with birds that are super henned up, as the hens just march away.

A good rule of thumb is, if the hens are vocal and loud, then be loud. If the hens are silent or very soft, then follow suit. Works pretty well IMO.

I knew you were going to bust my azz setterman.lol

Ha, I wasn't trying to, and hope you and everyone else hunts the way you want to, it is your hunt not mine.

It depends on the situation and the bird. I love to call hard to a bird and have him gobble all the way in. But more often than not its the soft stuff that kills most of my birds.

For me it all depends on the bird
If he likes soft and sweet thats what I give him
If you get too agressive and he has hens
the next time you hear him gobble he will be two
ridges away

I agree with this, although I'm not all that good at it. I set up within 70 yards of a bird that was on the ground last year and had him dead in 5 minutes with 2 purrs.

I set up withing 200 yards of a different bird and it took almost 2 hours.

I don't have a lot of experience, but to me it seems like getting in tight to them makes it much easier than anything else you can do. To do this you have to know the land and cover. Its the step above knowing where the turkeys like to go, its knowing where they are and how you can kill them right there. Saves time but will probably lead to some busted birds. Especially early in the season before green up.

sometimes you can get too close to them.lol I had one gobbling and he was facing away from me and I thought he was on another ridge.I was moving on him and he gobbled again and was in a tree 40 yards from me.I had to sit down in the logging road.i could have shot him out of the tree.I was too close and thats a time i didn;t call loud at first. He had several hens fly into the trees around him then he flew down and with them.He didn't answer many of my calls.he stayed in strut with the hens.

i moved on the bird several times but he wouldn't leave the hens.about 9 he wouldn't answer anything but a crow call so i kept up with him that way.I finally cutt nonstop and he went crazy gobbling. The bird left the hens and came into 20 yards finally. He was an older bird.1 1/4 spurs and 23lbs best i remember

well when the spurs are 1 1/4 the bird is old enough lol love calling them in but when the spurs are 3/4 it takes away some of the hunt but it still fun

Disagree. If its a longbeard. It cranks my tractor. Spurs are just icing on the cake.

thats ok we don't have to agree :D I don't know why im some big trophy turkey hunter but I can shoot a small buck and be happy lol

i prefer spurs too. i'm fortunate to hunt around a lot of ag land and i'm usually looking for the spurs before i shoot.

the loudness of my calls depends on the individual bird i'm calling to. i love watching those 2 yr olds gobbling their heads off running in to the decoys. it's very hard not to pull the trigger on them.

If you are saying you only shoot turkeys with 1 1/4" spurs or longer then my guess is you have about as many turkeys as you have 150" deer.....Not many!!!! :D :D :D

I shoot them all.I don't always have time to look but i have a lot more 1 1/4 spurs than 150 racks :D

Like i said i am not picky and I only have 1 criteria before i shoot...if he is mature he is riding home in the truck or running away with his ears ringing!

I can relate to that... :D It would be nice if those 150" bucks were as common and as easy to kill as long spurred gobbles..

I LOVE to turkey hunt but if they didnt GOBBLE it would not be near as much fun!! And when they are carrying big ol' hooks thats just extra......

Thats how i think also.i could shoot more turkey by sitting on fields but i like to hear them gobble so I hit the woods and call

I used to call alot and loud...but over the years, i've gone to sweet n' sassy, working my way up. It all depends on what a particular bird likes and what transition they are in... but I kill a whole heck of alot more than i used to, when it was either "call'em in or scare'em away". The kamikaze's are nice and i'll take em, but I like to get in their head and play mind games, when time allows. Whatever works for you though..to each their own.

lol turkey are the dumbest animal if you play mind games with them you are thinking too much. :D But i know what you are saying.they are so dumb at times they seem smart when they don't come to the call.

Hahaha, I hear ya brother. The best way I can explain it is: think about the woman you always wanted to be with. What happens when she starts getting cold or not as interested?..You go freakin crazy! Sure sure, there are some that run right in..but it's reverse phsycology at its finest!
