Field hunting/woods hunting? I guess it all depends on the land you hunt. One place I hunted was in large part, a bunch of fields separated by strips of woods. Half the time the birds roosted near them and flew directly into them at flydown. It's hard not to have to hunt fields there and I killed a bunch of turkeys there. I like being in the timber working birds but I didn't enjoy calling one in in a field any less.
 
Hunting out of tree stands without a harness is the height of stupidity, and honestly those who do help the overall intellect of society when they die. Harsh to say, but if you're stupid enough to leave the ground with no harnes you're not smart enough to get much done.

Fanning is unsafe but not on the same level of not wearing a harness.

If our culture, and the culture of hunting wasn't turning into a have to have instant success and Facebook picture driven sport people wouldn't need the crutch of a fan, decoy, blind or many of the other garbage trinkets used these days. They'd tough it out and kill field birds without a crutch, sure it's tough but also rewarding. As with almost everything these days everyone wants it easy without any work
