My daughter (7) has been chomping at the bit to kill a deer. I told her I would do my best, but that her older brother (9) got to go first. She was fine with that. She has listened and paid attention and asked questions and put her time practicing with the rifle. My son punched his tag on day 2 of the juvy weekend, and my daughter might have been more excited than he was since that made it her turn.

Earlier this week, she very sweetly asked, if she did kill one, if we could make enough jerky for her to take for her class at school. I thought that was one of the coolest things I've been asked to do as a father, so absolutely!

We set out early this morning and went to a small box blind over a newish food plot. The plot itself turned out pretty poor this year, but its green and in a good spot. We were in the action as soon as dawn broke, but the first doe stepped out at 6 yards, picked us off as I tried to get everything into position, and bounded back into the poplars. She then walked in a half circle around the plot blowing for half an hour. But apparently, the other deer began to ignore her after a while. I could see three other does and a small buck intermittently through the trees (no shot possible). The does fed around while the buck pestered them, paying no mind to the blowhard. My girl watched them through binoculars and gave me a full play-by-play commentary. While this was going on, I caught movement to the left and got her situated. This doe came out and began feeding at 40 yards. The shot was perfect and the blood trail short. Being Dad is the best. I don't know what I did to deserve it, but God is good and my cup runneth over.

I just re-sharpened my skinnin' knife. Jerky time!
