Opinion on blood trail?

Worst part about it is the kid lives next door to where i grew up. Some of my old wooden stands are still there although falling down šŸ˜ƒ. My dad and myself built them a little over 20 yrs ago. I know the property well. Can still vividly remember how the terrain lays over there and could probably take him right to that deer. Im sure he wont sleep tonight šŸ˜ƒ. Heck i probably wont either

Shot a nice 8 pt Sat. He did the same thing after the shot. Found him an hour later, bullet did not exit. Shot with a 7mm08 120 gr. Hornady SST at 40 yards. Only found 3 small drops of bright red blood. I say your deer is dead, hope you find him.

I'd say he's dead for sure. It's cold enough tonight that it should be fine. But I'd get after it as early as possible. And if I couldn't find him I would call in the dogs. Grid search and don't miss a spot. Make sure you walk in straight lines as you can veer off course then back and that's when you can walk right by him. Good luck he isn't alive I'm almost sure of that.

A little update. My son is helping look for the buck this morning and just text me saying he found a tooth. Hes trying to get me a picture but not enough cell service to send at the moment. I hope he didn't pull the shot and hit the deer in the face area. Never experienced that before. I would guess it would be a lethal hit but would think it could days or weeks for the deer to expire?

I have heard horror stories of deer running around for a long time with a jaw blown partly off. Hope that is not the case here, and hope they find a dead deer this morning.

I've always heard mule kick equals heart shot but I'm no expert. Pic does look like some lung.
I have also heard this may times. I had never actually seen a deer mule kick until archery season this year. I hit one a glancing shot at the very top of the back. He mule kicked and took off. I have seen that buck several times since. He was hit so that the arrow passed just under the skin on the top of his back.

All they have found this morning

Finding that tooth is really odd considering the amount of blood. I've seen it too many times where inexperienced hunters rush after the deer, jump him up, mess up all the sign, then ask for help. By the time an experienced tracker gets there the trail has been trampled over and all sign is gone or hidden. Sounds like that might be the case here. I sure hope your son can find him. At least he's found some new sign to work from.

By now he just needs to look for the Buzzards. If he went after him too soon it could be a long way off. Tell him to check any creek banks.

Many a deer has survived a jaw hit . Till they starve to death. :(

Seems like a lot of blood could spill out really quickly if an animal is shot in the jaw; similar to one of the original photos.

Any word on the position of the deer relative to the shooter?

Finding blood and losing an animal leaves an awful feeling. I guess they have given up by now?

Is there no one with a dog in your area. At least peace of mind. Or at least before rain of any sort by then forget it. Hope they get him.

I dont know if anyone in the area has a dog or not. According to the shooter the deer slightly quartered to him. They have up the search about 2 pm today. Neighboring land owners are helping in the search now as well. Not looking good but maybe he'll get lucky

That's definitely not a piece of lung in the picture. I was thinking with the blood sprinkled like it looks to be in the picture that it was dripping from up high on the animal, not being pumped out, like it would be if it was a heart/lung hit.

I sure hope he finds it, but it's not looking good from what I've seen.
