What if he was with other deer and they all scatter? Which kicked up leaves do you follow?

I love hunting in the rain with a gun. I don't hunt in the rain with a bow.

It has been my experience that deer run farther and longer via hit with a bullet than they do when hit with an arrow.

Also been my experience that the deer don't scatter in different directions either. They are herd animals and stick together; they feel safer in numbers against predators than they do by themselves. Thus in the case of multiple deer at the shot...they always head in the same general direction together, with the other deer they were traveling with. All herd animals are that way.

My experience has been 100% the opposite. Most deer I've killed with a gun have dropped in their tracks or died within sight. No matter how good a bow shot, they always run some. Anytime I've shot a deer with other deer they scatter in every direction. I guess in the heat of the moment they forget they are herd animals.

Interesting. I will admit that I don't rifle hunt much. I have killed far more with a bow than I have with a gun. In bow hunting, a double lunged deer ain't going far. Most I have killed have fell within sight or earshot. I have only killed deer with 3 calibers of rifle...a .270, a .308, and a .243. I've never dropped one in its tracks with a rifle. They always seem to run a good ways with me. Muzzleloaders are a different story though. I've killed a many of them with ML that as soon as the smoke cleared, there the deer was dead as a hammer. Just my experience though.

I have no experience with a .270, and limited experience with a .308, but in my experience a deer shot with a .243 (a well placed shot) can still travel a ways. I hunt with a 30.06 and now so does my son. Tracking is usually not necessary. It just drops em.

I hunt with a 270 and have killed several deer with it and ive only had one deer run. and I killed my bear with it and it dropped as well. and ive never seen a deer drop with a ml they always seem to run with it.

When I used powerbelts they usually dropped in their tracks but the bullet was always inside the body. No exit wound=no blood trail. I figured eventually it would cost me so I changed to Barnes Expanders. Haven't killed a deer with them yet.
