Permethrin!

My Wednesday walk, I went through the bottom in a bedding area looking for sheds. I had one on my wrist when I pulled my hoodie off. Yep, it's time to be using permethrin, I need to mix some up.

Got one off me Saturday after running traps. My porch window on camper has a bunch of lady bugs trapped between window & screen. Couldn't find any bug spray & grabbed a bottle of Permthrin and sprayed them, all dead in 5 minutes. Curious to see if it keeps them out of there for a while

Just as a little follow up on the source of permethrin, I have had a couple of phone conversations with a product specialist from the company that makes the Martin's permethrin. He confirmed that they no longer make a water based concentrate. All of their product now is petroleum based.

For my (our) purpose he suggested I look into the equine fly spray solutions to see if I could find a water based there as well. I found this one that is water based: https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/product/dumor-equine-fly-spray-1-gal
When I checked back in with him concerning a chemical or two that is included as well as the permethrin, I got the standard (and very proper) notification from him that my intended use would be "off label". I suspect he had reflected on our conversation from the day before as well where we didn't go down that road. He was aware of the TSC product since he used to work for the company that makes it. He basically said that it was water based and probably wouldn't have as much residual scent as a petroleum based product. But, he did caution me that since a lot of the equine products are used by ladies, that such products likely have some "scent" added to them to make them smell better. I haven't been to TSC yet to get some, but I would suspect that the residual scent after it dries is less than the petroleum based products.

I can live with the after scent from the petroleum based concentrates on my turkey clothes, but, I really don't like it on deer hunting stuff. But, I like ticks even less. I have a trip to TSC coming up.

This one I use is still water based.

Have you looked into Happy Jack Kennel Dip for treating clothes? It's 17% permethrin and has no petroleum distillates. I've read where others have used it but I haven't tried it myself. An 8oz bottle would treat two gallons.

Just looked this up and it's already pre-mixed to .5%, but it is pricey!
It has gone up since I last bought a year ago quite a bit but ready to use gallon jugs with a spray nozzle is a convenience I and the guys I work with are willing to pay although this new price will make me look around.

Do you find ticks on your clothes during deer season? I left TN in 2015 and had just started getting into hunting again at that time. Things could have changed but I don't recall having issues with ticks outside of turkey season and of course during the Summer.

Permitheren that has some scent isn't good for deer season, especially bow hunting, but I'd gladly take my chances at getting smelled by a deer over dealing with ticks. Of all the dangers in the woods, they worry me the most because of their ability to transmit a nasty disease without you knowing until it's too late.

Every time I find one of those things on me I wish we'd drop permitheren from a helicopter like they drop water to fight wildfires and kill all them bastards.

Below is a post I found on another forum about using Happy Jack. Thinking I may give it a try and save my petroleum based stuff for spraying around the house/deck:

I use Happy Jack's kennel dip.
Happy Jack's

It's a 17% concentration and if you read the military specifications for personnel treatment they call for a .5% concentration. 8oz mixed with two gallons of water comes out about .7%. When I treat my clothes I use gallon size zip lock baggies and roll up one pair of cargo pants or jeans or two shirts as tight as I can place them in the baggie and add one pint of the mixture seal it up and let the liquid saturate the garments for 24 hours, let them hang on the clothes line too dry completely. You should not handle the mixture with bare hands but once the clothes have dried it is totally safe so I always wear nitrile gloves when handling the liquid.

Happy Jack's has no petroleum distillates and does not have any smell once dry like the ones that do. I have used a petroleum based concentrate and could not stand the smell and it was strong.

I am spraying for ticks at least until we have had a couple of HARD freezes. And, even then, if you have a warming spell they will be out and about.
