Playoff Chaos

😚

Kiffin doesn't want to play in it because he knows what will happen.

Texas is the only SEC program with one loss this season, while five others — Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M and Kiffin's Rebels — have two each. Imagine if Texas A&M defeats Texas next weekend and every other program wins out, and you've got the makings of Kiffin's proposed crisis: Play in Atlanta at your own risk

Kiffin's quote from the article:

I've talked to other coaches, so I'll just kind of give you the feeling from some other coaches that, you know, they don't want to be in it," Kiffin said Monday during his weekly news conference. "You know, the reward to get a bye [in the CFP] versus the risk to get knocked out completely, I mean, that's a really big risk just to get a bye.

There's zero benefit to playing in the SEC championship game. Bragging about a conference championship vs losing your spot in the CFP.

If you're a 2-loss team playing in the SEC championship game and lose I don't think you should be leapfrogged by another SEC school or really anybody else for the playoffs. . Shouldn't be penalized for playing in a game that others in your own league didn't make it to. Hate to admit it but I agree with Kiffin on this.

Exactly. The problem with the argument that the loser shouldn't be penalized loses steam when you factor that the teams playing in it could come down to drawing straws.

How awesome would that be? The ADs of the teams gathered around drawing. That would be TV gold.

And, I'm sure everyone would be fine if A&M is the losing team in the championship game and them going while knocking your team out.

I don't think anyone's saying that the SEC Championship loser should automatically get it ... just that the loss shouldn't count against them. In your scenario a randomly selected Texas A&M (currently ranked 15) goes to Atlanta and loses...they'd stay number 15 and still wouldn't be in the playoffs. Now look at this scenario: your #11 Vols are selected to go to Atlanta and lose. Should they fall to 13+ and out of the playoffs, or should they keep their #11 playoff spot?

I think my son (math genius) came up with the best solution: freeze the rankings after the last game of the regular season...the championship games will be for awarding the byes and determining which non-power-4 team gets in. It solves all the problems we've been talking about and keeps everyone on a level field.

I'm not saying I agree or disagree, but the counter-argument to that is that Playing in the SEC championship game would boost your strength of schedule significantly.

Using the SEC for instance, what if a two loss team loses in the SECCG and makes it a 3 loss team and it loses badly,I don't believe that team would have a place in the playoffs

Even now, with serious chaos, it is possible for Texas A&M to get into the SEC Championship game, win the SEC Championship game, and get into the playoff with 3 losses.

So you think if Texas beats them, they can still get in SEC championship game?? I can't see that without a ton of help

I guess it's slightly possible if Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and ole miss all takes losses before that chip game
