In our Rx mgr class in January they briefly touched on those services. The cost per lineal foot for the line construction was very advantageous for the landowner, much cheaper than hiring us to come out and run our equipment. There are obviously not enough TDF folks in the state to respond to all the demand but they highly encouraged us to engage as much as we could and see what they could do.

If the only way to get experience in burns is to participate in burns, and it sounds like it is, then my brother and I plan to volunteer for other like kind landowners so we can get the experience, provide support for others and then hopefully get some of the help in return for our future burns.

I used'em once and would recommend esp. if you don't have the experience, equipment, help, or water. They brought everything in spades and flat got it done.

Nope - as @fulldraw mentioned, any one can (even though I'm certified). I'm going to our place today and if conditions are right (NWS says conditions are good for my area) - but I need to look at ground moisture and wind speed. If those 2 check off, I'm calling it in and burning the few hours before dark. Tomorrow is definite on a couple units

Having someone else run the burn - especially a group experienced with burning - would be a HUGE load off my mind.

These guys were expert. Yeah I've got my own drip torch, wind meter, backpack blower etc but they brought 7 guys, 2 dozers, and a combined who knows how many years/burns of experience. The burn boss has been doing this for 30+ years.

At no point did I ever feel like everything wasn't 100% under control.
 
Kentucky makes it tough on you to burn. These two burn ban dates are state wide. You could also have a county burn ban anytime during the year.
Kentucky law designates February 15 through April 30 as spring forest fire hazard season. October 1 through December 15 as fall forest fire hazard season. During these times it is illegal to burn anything within 150 feet of any woodland or brush land between the hours of 6 am and 6 pm.

I wasn't aware of this. Do you have contact info for a West TN office or personnel I could reach out to? I spent the last two days running a saw trying to prepare for a burn but I'm as green as it gets when it comes to burning. I'd love to get some professional advice as well as help with it.

If you reach out to your area forestry office I think there's a work around for Rx burns during these times. I know prescribed fire occurs in Ky during these months so it's not completely banned.

Your biggest challenge to getting it done this spring is developing a burn plan and scheduling a crew. There's already likely a waitlist for this spring and what they're able to get to all comes down to conditions on any given day.

Last time I talked to TDF it was $450 minimum for them to come and this minimum fee is applied to the first 10 acres...so this is the route we hope to take...have them develop our first burn unit and manage everything and then go from there...would love to have multiple units to rotate between each year.
