Sawtooth not producing

I've got several that are 9-12 years old and never produced. I'm thinking firewood. Anyone see any reason to keep them?

I'm in the same boat. I have 30 ish in the 8-10 year old time frame. None have produced yet. All have grown well and are in optimal locations for producing. I could not consider cutting them down because they will produce at some point. Maybe this year fingers crossed. With getting so many years of growth on them when they do produce it should be enough acorns to make a difference. My chestnuts all produced after about 3 years but just recently got big enough to have an impact / draw and they are 12-15 years old.

Unless you're just hard up for firewood, I'd leave them be.

I planted 3 about 10 years ago, and 2 of them made it.
I've never seen any acorns on them yet- maybe this fall will be their year.

I have a lot of 16 year old sawtooths that produce a ton of acorns very early in the fall. The first acorns came at age 9. At 10 the trees really produced a lot of acorns. The drought hit them last year and they dropped the acorns before maturing. I would leave them alone unless you need the space. You already have several years committed to their growth.

Granted the sawtooth acorn drop is too early for hunting, but it brings a lot of deer on to our farm as archery season opens. This is part of our strategy to have food sources available all the way through January.

I'm going to try and remember to check mine this Fall. I know there'd be acorn caps left behind though, if they'd had many acorns.
