FL and several other SEC Teams do not need to go to the west coast for exposure/recruiting purposes. Fulmer figured out years ago that it was hard to recruit in the state of TN because TN is a very rural area, minus Memphis. Of course it's hard to pull kids out of Memphis because Bama, Ole Miss, and Ark. are closer than UT.
It worked in the past for UT to get kids from the west coast to come to Knoxville. There's a reason that the last several years TN had one of the highest recruiting budgets in the SEC. Only approx. 1/3 of the kids on the 2014 roster are actually from the state of TN and that % was probably higher in years past. Take FL for instants, only approx. 1/3 of their players are not from FL.

My point is that UT used playing teams on the W. coast to introduce the program to w. coast kids. Had nothing to do with better teams on the west coast or UT just likes to take long plane rides....
