I hear all these ppl talk bout getting real close to the bird on the roost right after they hear that first gobble of the morning. Where they havent roosted him the night before or scouted him out or anything, just show up get out and listen. My question is do them ol thunder chickens start gobbling earlier in different parts of the state then they do here, or what. Bc I normally here that first roost gobble right at twilight. I have heard some ol timers around here say they used to hear birds gobbling hour or more before daylight, but you no how they just like to talk to someone who will listen to them lol

Depends, I have several farms I hunt in several different counties. Some of them I can get the birds to sound off when it is still pretty dark ( a farm I hunt in Williamson County for example). Some of the places I hunt ( a farm in Marshall County for example) the birds don't really start talking until its nearly light enough to pull the trigger.

Around here its more like your farm in Marshall, no way I could slip in on one still roosted after I hear his first gobble, with it being almost shooting light.

I dont know that Ive heard one gobble here in the dark either. Usually its getting light, I know when the crows come off the roost, I can expect to start hearing gobbling.

i can blow a goose call and get gobbles 30 minutes before light on some occasions usually during the 2nd and 3rd week of season is when i have my best sucess with getting them to sound of in the dark

I have a buddy who carries more locator calls than he does turkey calls lol, he has a goose call, owl hooter, crow call, peacock call and a coyote squeeler, I guess if nothing else hell hear one gobble.

sms im glad you commented bc your not too far from me, so I no its not just me hearing gobbles at almost light around here.

I will have to say I quit any crow, owl or any other locater calls years ago. I have heard more gobbles to my camper door slamming shut then I have with real owls hooting, real crows crowing or anything else. I like watching the woods "wake up", but don't really hussle to get out of camp.
