I hate to disappoint the non-jake shooters, as this isn't that question !

You are working a bird, and he seems committed. Then, from another direction a coyote steps out, in range.

Not me, I would make a motion with my hand to hopefully spook the yote so he'd run off and I'd continue working the bird. Research shows no amount of hunter kills can make an appreciable dent in a localized coyote herd so there is no way I am messing up a turkey hunt to kill one.

I'm with you Andy. I've been passing up coyotes now for several seasons. I had one bed under my tree I have on video. Why ruin their day and mine when it does no good?

I quite often see coyotes while deer hunting and have had a dog come in while turkey hunting once. I shot that dog because he had already ruined my turkey hunt. Otherwise they always get a free pass unless my hunt is over and I'm about to head back to the truck. I spend too much time and energy trying to kill what I'm after to potentially blow it by shooting a coyote.

Only because I am hoping to get my first turkey this Spring, I'd let that yote go. Any other time, that's a dead dog.

SO much more fun to shoot a yote in close with a shotgun than to ever shoot a turkey. My favorite was blasting one at 10 yards with the SP-10... it literally lifted him off the ground when the softball sized pattern of 2.5 ounces of lead hit him. Smoked another at 40 yards... DRT... didn't think it would kill him like that at that distance, and I'd love to kill a few more this season.

Probably not. I'd try to spook him out of there but if he just walked in my lap I might blast him.

I would shoot the yote as the farmer wants as many dead as possible.......wish I had my rifle this morning when scouting.....had one in with the cows/calves.....he just stood there and watched me

Kill every yote at anytime! What a trophy with a shotgun! Unless you've never killed a bird, but I've killed far more turks than dogs so I'd shoot and be proud to help the flock and herd
