Has anyone sized up the turkey population in W TN, especially considering the flooding from last Spring? I own a small farm between Yorkville and Central. It borders the N Fork of the Forked Deer River bottom. Prob major losses to the hatch unless they did a second nest. Sounds like flooding occured at the worst possible time.
I also hunt in Weakley County, maybe a bit better over there.
I'm seeing signs of being able to make it to W TN, my knee is getting better after replacement. I'm just an OF with new parts!
Thanks Ray

From what I seen around the river bottoms in carroll and weakley county there was a great hatch of late poults. My opinion is the flood forced them to renest and that put them hatching late which in turn provided warmer, drier, better conditions and chances for a much better survival rate. The question is how many hens had a second nest? From my personal sightings I feel that there was less hatches but better survival rate so there was no significant impact on the population.

Look at it this way, Ray.......Last years hatch will have no impact on this years gobblers that are two years old and older. Next year may be a problem but I doubt it. In southeastern Carroll Co., the flood did not seem to hurt the nesting. I saw several hens with poults all summer long with one hen that had 12 young ones with her.
I will let you know for sure the first week of April!
