Wading Duck Spots - Central TN

Hey guys, following along on this thread. My wife's family is from the Brentwood area and we will be in the area Tuesday 12/19 through Christmas. I'd love to find a good spot or 2 in the area to do some duck hunting while in town for the week. Any advice is appreciated or if anyone wants to link up and go together. I do have a trained duck dog that'll be with me.

First hunting season in TN, and I'd really like to get a duck hunt or two in now that deer season is coming to an end. I have 3 main problems:

1. I don't know hardly anyone in TN
2. I don't have a boat
3. I don't have a duck dog

So, I'm looking for areas I can wade to retrieve or set up. The two places I've online scouted are cheatham lake and duck River around yanahli. Are either of those areas wade-able? Does it depend on the specific spot you're going to? I'm assuming Percy priest and old hickory are too deep to wade.

Not looking for anyone to drop me a pin, but if someone can help we with a body of water that's wade-able, I'd greatly appreciate it. I work before sun up and past sundown during the week so I'm limited to weekends for scouting and/or hunting and those are running out quick.

Thanks!
I know it has been a few years but I just moved to Nashville and have the same questions as you. I would appreciate any advice. I also don't know many hunters around TN yet so would be up for a group hunt sometime.

Thanks!

Cheatham has a wade in area by Dysons Ditch. Some days it is terrible, some days you can shoot a couple (but then again you can say the same for the blinds).
It's worth looking in to.

Tier 4 blinds

How to find them
The TWRA does a good job of defining Tiered locations but there is a lot of work they need to do on the online mapping. It is not user friendly and doesn't clearly show the areas on a map. Unless I am missing a mapping tool that's not shown. I wish they would do a better job of directing hunters to the proper locations on these WMAs.

is that wading into blind hop one of the marked blinds or is there an area that doesn't require drawings.
Looks like there only a handful of Tier 4 locations available on any given body of water and they're first come first serve. So you'd better be there early if you want to snag it. If someone's there before you, depends on what kind of person is there, they just may invite you to jump in.

yes it would help if they'd add a color legend for the blinds. Right now all they show is a circle and you have to click on it to see what tier level the blinds are.

Or go during the week when it's legal.

Yep. It's 2024 and they have to catch up with the times.
It was a couple years ago they had maps posted that were pretty clear. I recall seeing the wade in area for cheatham posted and clearly marked. I never went though. Other WMA maps had blinds numbered and designated with circle or triangle and blind number. This new GIS tool they're using is terrible for the hunter--almost useless.

I drew a Thorny pool for Dec and there was really no clear info on the map. Thankfully another member on here PMd me location details on the pool I drew.

Not a lot of options outside the Cheatham wade in area in middle TN. there are a couple you could wade into at OH if you know where the ditch is, but they're usually occupied. If you have a boat, I'd suggest some mid-week hopping at any of the WMAs.

I want to say they (T-dub) awarded all of the "temporary" blind spots on OH this year. Not sure why (more "opportunity" is probably the reasoning). So potentially even fewer spots you could hunt from a boat if you were inclined, at least initially. I do not know how many have reverted to Tier 4.

Used to you could get a list of the blinds that reverted to Tier 4 pretty easily from the WMA Manager. Not sure now. The GIS map and OnX lag behind.

The converted all the temporary (letter) stakes at OH to season long a few years ago when the computer draw started. No idea why.

I also just moved to Nashville this year from Iowa where open public water was relatively easy to find and people could spread out. I also, don't have a boat and have traditionally had success packing in 12 dekes and a pulsator for some movement. After researching TN all off season and scouting Cheatham, Camden, and AEDC the last several months I'm still unsure of tier 4 blinds vs temporary hunt locations and how they differ? is it just the 200 yard limit?

Either way i'm super excited to hunt TN and not deal with the northern cold and breaking ice for half the season and am looking forward to meeting new folks. If anyone ever needs a +1 for their group, or is looking for someone else to wade in with and doesn't mind carrying their weight. Shoot me a PM!

I've been scouting the list of Tier 4 blinds and have a short list of wadable spots I'm looking to explore. Going to be in TN long term, so i'm excited to dig my heels in, learn the state and make some new friends!

Thanks!

I also moved here from Iowa. Duck hunting is definitely different. Best of luck to you! Not sure on the their 4 vs walking in. I've done walk in or have been drawn for tier 1 or 2 opportunities
