Walleye jig spoon thing question

I picked up some spoon things for walleye. The spoon is 1/2 - 5/8" and has a hook soldered to the back. It has also had the back "leaded" to give it weight. Being new to walleye fishing, I'm not sure what you put on the hook...a plastic, minnow, cut bait, or what. Also I read that reds and oranges were the colors that walleye see best.

My question...
I got a couple red and orange colors of powder coat, to add some color to spoon. My thought was to just do about 1/8 - 1/4" edge coating. Does this sound about right, or should I do something else?
