In 2005 I was at Bass Pro and they had a sale on a Remington 597 with a factory scope. It was like $150, maybe less. When I told them I would take one they said they were out of the model with a scope from the factory but would put a Redhead scope on it for the same price.

It had some feeding issues in the beginning, but man that thing was crazy accurate. I didn't shoot it much over about 30-50 yards, but just constant dime sized groups. I've had .22's at far more cost that couldn't do that.

If you're serious about accuracy throw your dime away and use a pencil eraser. That's accurate. And good 22 ammo isn't cheap
Too old for that. Any smaller is beyond my capabilities regardless of the gun or the ammo. Dime sized groups with a cheap rifle and cheap ammo puts a smile on my face.

If you're satisfied with dime sized groups just pick up whatever you find and have a blast, no pun intended. I used to think that was accurate until a guy at work brought me some Lapua ammo. My gun came alive. Too bad it's hard to find and stupid expensive.

I am satisfied. I shot in competition for years. I did it with off the shelf guns and ammo. The limiting factor now is me. That will happen to you too, no matter how much money you spend. Enjoy those eraser sized groups while you can.

There are guys out there that can pick up a $500 rifle with $200 scope and hurt the feelings of the high dollar crowd. I've watched that happen. And that will put a smile on most people's face also.

Then you have the guys that don't even need a scope. ;)

I took my cheap setup and shot against those guys and can tell you 100% in the 22 world good ammo matters. If you truly shot in competitions and were competitive you'd know that.

Dimes and erasers? Wow, I am definitely an amateur, my goal is usually a quarter. I've only owned a few .22 rifles, my 10/22, an MP5 looking .22 and an AR-7 way back in the day. Many a squirrel and prairie dog have fallen to the 10/22 and the AR-7, with whatever ammo I could find at K-Mart (yes I'm old) or now Walmart. I don't shoot competition, obviously, but 1" at 100 yards has served me well for many years.

If you can hit a quarter at 100 with a 22 you're doing good. Guy I work with shoots with a group and they shoot 40 yards. He said you better have them in a pencil eraser. Take mup and his competitions over the summer. Dime sized groups ain't winning at 50 yards. It works for beer cans and rabbits. But not in the competition world

What targets did you shoot? We shoot USBR, IBS and ABRA. None of that is happening in the leagues I shoot in.

Anyone that can hit .128" 10 ring x 20-25 targets per card with open sights is a mutant.

Factory guns get destroyed in the upper divisions where I shoot.

Yea, like I said, I do not compete and one of their scopes, bipods, or probably even their support bags could buy all my .22s. Competition is cool, just never interested me, at least not serious competition. We would play games with game shooting targets, like a dart boards and such or a dueling tree, or knocking cans over at 100 yards, but nothing like what competitions are now.

I don't compete either, but I've shot with mup once or twice and got my butt handed to me. My gun is capable, but my ammo and scope choice is not.

I didn't shoot .22's. I shot PPC.

However...I totally let this thread get derailed. I apologize if I somehow insulted you professional marksmen that was not my intent. My intent was to talk about accurate cheap .22's. If you have never had one, maybe this thread isn't for you.

I've had them and do have them and none of them will work in the competitions I shoot in. You mentioned shooting in competitions in a 22lr forum so I assumed you shot in 22lr comps.

It's funny but I did the exact same thing at Bass Pro except I was told they were completely out of them. I went straight to Walmart and they matched the price at Bass Pro so I ended up getting one. And like yours my Remington 597 is very accurate.
