What call did you start out with.

Re: What call did you start out with.

A Roger Latham True Tone box call that Mr. Wiley from church gave me.

HS Strut Field Champion "Natural" box call. Still have it and it still sounds good 15 years later.

Same here. Wish I knew how many attempted yelps I've made with that call.

Re: What call did you start out with.

I had an Ol' Yeller later on. For some reason it stopped sounding right. I wouldn't mind having one of the originals.

I had one also that I used for several years and had the same result. Maybe something happened with the sound board. It was my goto for the soft stuff.

My first mouth call that I felt confident with was The Old Boss Hen by Quaker Boy. I have gone through many over the years and still carry one or two with me every spring.

Circa 1970...$4.95

Re: What call did you start out with.

Tom Gaskins Sr. Scratchbox and a wingbone. Have accidently broke many wingbones since then, but still hunt them and that original scratchbox to this very day.

Where could a man get his hands on one of those scratch boxes?

This!! Killed several birds with it too. Almost talked myself into buying another one the last couple years but I stepped it up to the crystal mistress this year ;)

Re: What call did you start out with.

Not a flashy call by any means. Gaskins Family still builds these calls out of their home in Venus Florida. You can buy them from Midwest Turkey Call Supply. The newer version is a little thinner walled and shorter than the older calls. Changes tone a little. I have and hunt both versions. I don't leave my truck without one in either my vest or shirt pocket. I grew up around both this family and their calls and all the "history" surrounding them. Just an "Old Florida" thing I reckon.

Re: What call did you start out with.

My first call was a HSStrut plastic push pull call. It sucked

Second was a MAD super aluminator.

I finally had a break through though when I ran into a guy named Mike Pentecost while hunting one of the national forests I used to hunt and he gave me too mouth calls that would become famous as Woodhaven Calls top sellers. Too bad he and his company went to hell, as back in the 90's they were awesome stuff.

I used to get his stuff too in Heflin. Good first five years or so. Then his 200 dollar aluminum calls would fall apart half way through the season.

Re: What call did you start out with.

My first calls were a Ben Rodgers Lee small rectangular slate call and a Lynch world champion box call. Not long after that I started playing with a Ray Eye mouth call and used mouth calls exclusively for the next 25 years or so before going back old school to pot calls and a Turpin Yelper. Ive still got those first 2 calls though!

Re: What call did you start out with.

Lynch fool proof was first call back in college in 1987, also bought some mouth call from someone and tried to learn how to use. I never had anyone for years show me anything about how to use the calls. I pretty much learned on my own. It was not pretty though!!! I remember sitting at my kitchen table in college trying to learn how to blow those mouth. I thought I was going to gag to death. I chased turkeys all over Tuskegee National Forest when I was in college. I could get them to gobble and answer me but never killed one. My footballl coach from middle school called up the first Turkey I killed Lafayette,Al. It was 7 years from buying my first turkey call till I killed that first turkey with my ole coach. I have been hooked ever since.
