Need Info from TSS guys

Ok i am pretty sure I am gonna move on to TSS for the 20g for sure. Can someone give me a run down of supplies needed minus shot including links if possible just so I know exactly what all components I will need.

I assume the following

Shot
Powder (what kinds am I needing to find)
Hulls (does it matter the brand of hulls)
Wad (does it matter the wad if so which are the best to use)
Primer (I assume standard shotgun primers)
Buffer?
Crimper (what type is cheap but good that doesn't result in cycling issues in benelli)
Scale

What else am i missing?

I'll go over to gobbler nation as well but I'm sure they get tired of people asking these generic questions
 
You'll order everything except the shot from Ballistic Products or Precision Reloading. You'll get exact compnents (hull, wad, felt, cork, mylar wraps, buffer, etc) from Hal when you place your order and tell him which gauge you'll be loading for. He'll recommend you a load based on the powder you have available, and he'll typically give you several loads to choose from. Just about all loads are unique in some way so there's no way for me to tell you what components you'll need without seeing which load Hal gives you. 3-4 months lead time is sometimes needed to get all components in hand, especially for the preferred loads that many shoot.

I'd try to locate at least 2 poinds of Lil' Gun powder as it is called for in most of the 20 gauge loads Hal has sent me. Type of hull, wad, cork, felt, etc is load specific, and can vary greatly from one load to the next. Hal has been testing TSS loads for at least a decade so he'll have plenty of options for you based on the availability of powder, hulls, wads, etc. I wouldn't expect to start this late in the game and be ready by TN opener, maybe by late April, but not likely as some highly sought after components start to dry up as we approach April every year. If you start now, you'll for sure be set by next spring, possibly by this summer depending on availability of powder, hulls, wads, etc.

Buffer must come from PR and I'd purchase a 20 gauge roll crimper from them too. One other thing, make sure you have every component you need when you order to avoid multiple shipping charges.
 
Most people love Federal hulls, but Fiocchi and Cheddite hulls kill just as good. Your choice will be dictated by availability most likely. Wads are load specific and the hulls come with primers. Cheap set of scales will be plenty to get started. The oddball parts most forget about are gas seals, felt, cork, mylar wraps and overshot cards if you are roll crimping with cordless drill or drill press.
 
Hal's prices are around $60/pound delivered to your door, and once you order, Hal will gladly share his lab tested load data with you, outlining every component, with simple instructions to follow.

And you can get TSS from Hal for a few dollars more along with the recipe.....expect to pay about $150 for the components minus the powder....components either come in packs of 100, 250, or 500.
 
Powder usually runs $30/pound when you find it in a local gun shop/reloading store. Most 20 gauge loads call for 1 5/8 ounce of shot, so you'll get 10 shells from one pound of shot.
 
You will not get started by turkey season this year, so as far as crimping I will suggest 2 things, either watch ebay for an antique 20 gauge roll crimper, or I would buy a Lee load all in 20 gauge and fold crimp.

The most used 20 gauge tss wad, the vp series, have been discontinued at the moment. But talk is they may be back. As far as components, I would go with something in a cheddite hull, because the availability of federals have been wishy washy the last couple of years
 
Hal is good people. Email him and he'll gladly explain everything to get you started and answer any and all questions you have. He's always been very responsive to emails, thus why I'm suggesting this.
 
REN and others that load 20ga TSS, I'll be very interested in your results with either 8s or 9s. I'm working on my next project over/under and decided to go the 20ga route.
 
Good deal. One other thing, don't get discouraged if shot or supplies are not available right now. Hundreds of reloaders across the US have been at it since Dec/Jan timeframe, thus why there's a shortage on SOME components around March to April every year. Good luck and let us know how it goes.
 
Any idea how far a 9.5 will break bone? Hadn't considered it before as I was concerned it might not perform from a kinetic energy perspective.
