Need Info from TSS guys

BW - the short answer is further than we need to be shooting. Extremely dense (18 g/cc) coupled with the tiny size equates to killer penetration performance. I've read several guys posts that said they wish they made it in #10 or #10.5s. Check this link out for penetration tests Hal did some time back. http://www.gobblernation.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1653

Good discussion about how lethal TSS #9s are. http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/7471721/Turkey_Load_(Handloads)

Hal quote taken from another forum. A member was questioning effectiveness of TSS 8.5s.

"The 8.5s he shot will out-penetrate lead 6s by 40%. (They will penetrate at 80 yds like lead 6s will penetrate at 46 yds.)"

In a word...dang. I was thinking I'd have to wait and hope and pray that Winchester would develop an LB for 20ga but I ain't never been known for being the most patient fellow in the world. Thanks for the links and information; very much appreciated.

I know with the 1 5/8 oz load of 9's my gun would have no problem out to 50 yards. You can get the 1 7/8 and 1 3/4 but its just over kill IMO. Good luck

Rockhound I'm curious as to why you recommend a antique roll crimper? They sell these everyday for $30 or so? Are the new ones subpar? Ours works great. Whiskey and I just loaded up 100rds a couple weeks ago.

I have both an antique and a new one. The antique has no learning curve, nice looking level crimps every single time,no worries about a drill, and it will crimp as fast as a drill powered tool. If you watch you can find the old ones for around the same price in the off season. It probably makes no difference but when I reach for one it'd the antique every time

Can someone give me a ball park amount one could expect to spend getting into TSS loading? I'm sure this can very, but just a ballpark for a beginner.

On the other forum I read where T'ss 9's will penetrate like number 4 lead.

I shoot 8.5s, but I have killed my last 15 birds or so using it and I can tell you, at 40 yards they will penetrate feathers, breast, breastbone, and exit the other side

$60/pound for TSS shot (1 pound = 16 ounces of shot = 8 (2oz) 12 GA shells or 10 (1 5/8oz) 20 GA shells), $150 for supplies for loading (hulls, wads, buffer, cork, felt, mylar wraps, overshot cards, roll crimper, etc), and $30/pound for gun powder. You can get started with one pound of powder and one pound of shot, but if you do any testing (patterning), you'll need 2-3 pounds of shot to test and then have some left over to hunt with. As Roost1 stated, the components mainly come in lots of 100,250 and 500, so once you buy them, you are set for several years, other than the TSS shot that you will have to purchase every few years, or in bulk so you will be set for 10+ years. Low side estimate would be $120 for 2 pounds of shot, $150 for components and $30 for powder, so around $300. You can cut down some of this, mainly on components if you go in halves with someone who wants to load TSS as well.

Also, because the shot is fairly expensive, several of us have built a TSS shot trap so we could recover our shot we test with and use it to test in other loads, and some even load it and hunt with it. In my shot trap, the shot hardly ever deforms so it looks like new shot when recovered and we typically recover 85-90% of the shot. See this thread to get an idea of a shot trap.

For all of the people who are not familiar with Hal and TSS, his handle is "hawglips" on every hunting forum that he and I are a member of, and probably several others that I am not a member of. I know he likes to duck hunt too and I think he and others load TSS for ducks and geese. If you are on some of these forums, just shoot him a private message (PM) and he will get back with you, or you can PM me and I will gladly pass along his email address, which is what you will need to order shot. You'll communicate with him and send funds via PayPal using his email address.

Thanks Andy great info. Do you know about how much each shot cost you once made? I read an article one guy was saying lead loads average 1.70 per shot and his TSS loads that he made cost him 7.15 a piece! Is this accurate? If so I don't see the benefit other than to do this as a hobby. I get the performance is better which is why I'm interested, but I didn't figure it would cost $5-6 more per shot.

$8/shell for 12 GA loads, $6 for 20 GA. Where TSS really shines is with those who want to tote a lighter gun like a 20 GA & 28 GA, but still have killing performance out to 50+ if they ever were to need it.

We are closer to 9-10 dollars a shot for 20ga as beginners.

I can get scales and crimper as well. Where I am lost are hulls and wads specifically for that powder and the odds and ends stuff

I doubt you are gonna get anyone to disclose Hal's recipe on an open forum......
x2, as that is the gentleman's agreement we all agreed to when purchasing shot from him. I have NEVER seen one of his recipes posted on an online forum, most likely because of the loyalty to Hal and because of the liability that could result from it if something were to go awry.

Wasn't asking for info on load data as I'm well aware of why it's not posted currently.

The guy I got it from has load data but also uses a wad that isn't made anymore so kinda hard to get that one and id rather not try to track down wads that won't ever be available again.
