Worst season I have had. Birds do not want to talk most days, and when they do, either they skirt me or I blow it. I've missed 3 birds with 2 different guns, and now I've got my new gun which I need to sight in today.
Today the action was way better than the past week. Started off moving on a field strutter on public land. Ended up on private land still working the same bird. He finally lost his hens and answered my call at 9:30 am. After playing the game, hearing him spit and drum, I had his head and neck in view at 20 yards, and I missed. Thought I might actually quit hunting. I have to be the worst shot to ever walk the turkey woods.
Well Zach Markus called and asked if I wanted to go check a couple of his spots out. We drove down to a small 10 acre parcel and struck a couple birds. Anywhere from 2 to 4 different birds we heard, on the next property. We called one in to our side, a big old tom spitting and drumming, but the setup was bad, and he saw us and ran for the hills.
We stopped at another spot with a big open field and spotted a whole gang of jakes with a couple hens. One of em was pretty big for a jake. We guessed they might be bully jakes that were keeping the toms away. So I said screw it, if we can fan these into range, I'll shoot one.
Well after scooting down the fence row like a couple of idiots hiding behind tail fans, we got the birds attention, and they came in on a string, and I picked out the big one and knocked him down cold on the ground. Zach got some awesome video.
He was 17 pounds 3 ounces with a 6 inch beard and 3 smaller beards. I rarely ever shoot a jake, and usually it's an accident. But this was a lot of fun, and a relief after hunting my tail off for over 15 days of the season without a bird to show for it. I shot him with a bare bones 870. Can't wait to sight in the new turkey killer. Just hope I learn how to shoot straight...someday. Lol
