#1 for the season, finally

Congrats man, my season has been similar to yours! Also, I know the feeling on missing... I missed SEVERAL before finally going to a scope.

Congrats! That's a huge jake for sure. I hint a LOT in the rain, so I actually prefer the saddle rails for scopes so I can still use my bead if the red dot lens gets rain on it.

We've all missed.... but I think you have the record :)

Great...I guess I'm the last one left who hasn't killed!

Congrats !

Nope. I'm with ya. Congrats cat. Did you miss first with the new gun?
No I haven't got time to sight in the new gun yet. Got the scope on it just need to send a few downrange. I cant wait to hunt with it. Very comfortable to hold and shoulder

That gun is not accustomed to missing so the pressure is on you. Lol. I hope it serves you as well as it did me.

You know, i never miss the target, whether free hand or on a rest... it's something about turkeys. I wish this dang rain would quit so I could go sight the gun in.

We are driving through TN, KY and in to MO today there are turkeys everywhere! It's like that are taking a breather in the fields during this light rain. I guess they feel safe?

I've killed longbeards that weighed less than that. That is the definition of super jake.

Yea my smallest gobbler weighed less than this bird, he was a 2 year old with a 10+ inch paintbrush that wasn't even 17 pounds.

Congrats on the new gun and turkey. I shoot an 870 too and I love mine.

the setup we were fanning was safer than most of the public land hunting I do. And not just because it's private land, but the way the land is laid out.

Congrats cat on the bird and the gun! You won't be disappointed with that 870. What choke and shells are you going to shoot out of it?

FWIW, here are my two recommendations:
1. Shoot a more open choke. Sure, the turkey may flop a little more without 3,125,649 pellets in his head and wattles, but he will be yours, and not fly off.
2. Aim a little lower than most turkey hunters, and keep your cheek welded to the stock. The majority of turkey misses come from the shooter giving up their cheek weld too early so they can hurry up and see if they killed him. This results in the majority of the pattern going right over the top of his head. I aim at the hairline and the wattles, and the majority of my pattern is at POA or a tad lower. If he is real tight on me (< 15 yards), I've been known to aim right above the beard. I don't like to miss. Good luck with your new gun, hope you kill a truckload with it.

Good move. I killed a bunch with the Double X and didn't really have a need for the heavier than lead shells for the 12 along with the price increase. That was until I shot a longbeard. Good luck with the new gun.

Also, I used to always focus on the 10" circle when patterning a gun. Now, the 10" is still important, but the 10-20" is important as well for a hunting pattern. It gives you more room for error. If I remember correctly, your old gun patterned ok but not great. This should be a good step up with the longbeard shells. Everyone has missed if they've hunted enough so keep your head up.
