I did not get the striker when I traded the other day, but so far I really like my dymond wood striker made by Harold Fowler.
Question for you guys that bought an aluminum form Darrin, do you condition this call or use some kind of chalk on the striker. If you use chalk, what kind?
I use the chalk he sent and have not touched the call surface. As I have stated before, I love the fact that I don't have to condition the call. I will get you the name of the chalk when I get home but any pool cue chalk would probably work.

"Silver Cup" billiard chalk.

I talked to Darrin last week about conditioning the aluminum. He told me that he uses a GREEN scotch brite on his call, it only effects the looks. He played one for me that he said he had used a conditioning stone on that was down to the raw aluminum, it still had the same sweet sound.

Plastic aluminum pot.

I exclusively hunt with his plastic pots, in both slate and aluminum. The plastic slate I hunt with is probably my favorite pot call and I have way too many to mention.

I'm on a budget so the plastic is what I think I'll buy. Does the slate sound better than the aluminum or just easier to work?

I am not going to go that far to say it sounds better, but to my ears, there is not a ton of difference. At the end of the day, the stubborn old bird that is hung up at 60 is the ultimate judge. The slate/striker combination is definitely easier to keep conditioned and ready to go, and it is easier to work IMO. I replied to your PM.

As others have stated in this thread, there is nothing like confidence when it comes to turkey hunting and calling to one. With that said, my confidence with my plastic slate pot puts it's price tag at $500, if not more. I realize no one in their right mind would offer/pay me that much, but that is the value of it to me when I am tight on an old bird and I need him to come a tad further, run that head up, and take a peak. It has served me well for the 4-5 years I have owned it.

I wouldn't take $2000 for my aluminum pot. In fact I might get even crazier on my affection for it if I was approached by a potential buyer

My plastic aluminum sounds really good to me and the birds respond well to it, but when I sit down with one I always rely on the walnut pot. It's just deadly in my hands and anyone who's hunted with me can attest to its aura

I understand money is an issue for folks and if $100 is too pricey the plastic dude will work better than anything you probably own at the moment.

I was curious. Wasn't sure how hard and time consuming a plastic pot would be to make. I did hear a sound file last night on oldgobbler of his plastic aluminum. Sounds good.

If you frequent OG, search for "hunter22 and darrin dawkins" or you can Google that combination. Rickey (hunter22) is retired, lives in AR, and LITERALLY owns 250+ pot calls from all of the custom call makers. Two things you might notice is which aluminum call he carrys and which he says will be the first out of his vest this spring (Darrin's aluminum in wood pot). He also loves Darrin's crystal call. Rickey is a pot call fanatic, no doubt about it. If any of you want the low down on a particular call maker, pot, and surface, I suggest you PM him to get his opinion (as well as others). Rickey knows what's up when it comes to pot calls, h*ll he owns more than the next 10 turkey hunters combined. Furthermore, he travels and hunts several different states every springs putting his favorite pot calls to the test. I've listed a few links below with his posts/opinions to further ensure you of his credibility, and that what I say is true.

Same for me, if I back something to the degree I do with ,,earrings calls then I truly feel that way. As most know I'm not bashful about running something down I dislike

There's not a finer aluminum call on the market imo

I spoke with Darrin tonight and all he has left are the plastic pots (slate, crystal, and aluminum)

I ordered one of each.

He sold his last wood pot yesterday and his box calls are a year wait.

Thanks Andy and Setterman for steering me his direction.

Andy- just let me know when you're ready to sell one of those one-piece dymondwood strikers that came with his call.
